NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering student answering questions!

Hi all,
I am an undergraduate student at NYU Poly aka NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering(on Jan.2014). Anyone interested in studying a 4 year engineering degree at NYU will be studying at the Poly building. NYU's math/computer science and any other science departments will take over Poly's once the merge is complete. Poly is already adopting some of NYU's policies. If you have any questions about this school, I'll be glad to answer. Before you ask, you may want to look into this first.

Update on Completing the Steps to Make NYU-Poly - NYU?s School of Engineering | NYU-Poly

Statement by NYU and NYU-Poly on NYS Regents? Approval of Merger

Freshmen | NYU-Poly

I’ll be attending Poly this year and I was considering changing my major to Math or CS at Poly. If the NYU will take over the Math/CS department, what would that mean for Math/CS majors? Would students be consolidated into Courant? Will students be able to change their major to Math/CS after the merger is complete? I wish Poly/NYU would put us more in the loop with the details, instead of ambiguously wording the legal documents.

It would mean you’re still a Poly student. I believe you have to apply to Courant when you applied to NYU. The course level and syllabus is the same.

bumppppppp

I’m a prospective freshman student for NYU engineering, I just wanted to know how much more competitive will admission be now that poly is officially part of NYU? Also is the writing section of the SAT considered in admission?
Also how is student life? Do you have much free time or is it all just work on top of work?

It will certainly be more competitive considering more and more people apply every year. They look at SAT writing but not as heavily as the critical reading and math. Student life at Poly is pretty intense. Get ready to be loaded with heavy amounts of work. Many kids at Poly are busy so… if you want to socialize and have fun, head to the main campus.

Kellogs, Engineering as a major itself is fairly intense, regardless of school, so your social life will not be the same as a drama major or something like that. If you don’t work hard at poly, you won’t do well. However, I still have plenty of friends from classes I take, an extra-curricular at school I participate in, and I can go out friday night (after studying) without a problem [on a 16 credit hour course load], but I generally spend my weekends hitting the books because that’s whats required of an engineering major.

Epiczero, NYUengineer, thanks for the info, I’m already accustomed to an intense workload (ib diploma student XD) so I guess I’ll just get used to it…

Anyone applied with IB predicted? Is 41/45 enough to make me competitive? Considering I have weak sat (1340 m+cr)… Retaking this Saturday… God help me!!
Do they consider sat2? Got 770 math 2, but going to retake in January with physics for an 800.

Wait, I’m confused… so will the NYU poly merged now be just as competitive as say CAS or Stern? I’m applying for engineering ED II.

Again it depends on the amount of applications. Since Poly is merged, NYU expects to take in people with worthy profiles and stats.

Hey there!

I applied to nyu poly for mechanical engineering, but i was wondering if i could minor in french which would be in CAS right.

Is this possible? Can i minor in other schools? I’ve looked it up but i would have to speak to an adviser first, if i got in that is.

I know it’s a while to think about a minor, but i geared one essay already geared one of my essays towards science research, and i didn want to talk about more science in my supplement. I wanted to show a different side, so i was wondering if it was ok to talk about french for my supplement.

Thanks a bunch!

@lostfan101,

You can certainly talk about anything you want in your essay as long it answers the prompt.
As far as minoring goes, Yes all students are allowed to minor at different schools at NYU but this process takes place after your first year. I hope this answers your question.

Is the Study abroad program available to student majoring in both math and Computer Science?

I believe study abroad is available for everyone no matter what your major is. NYU abu dhabi has all sorts of courses for you to take that will satisfy your course requirements because they offer almost all classes.

At NYU poly, would you say the male/female ratio is really noticeable/bothersome? I know that its like 80% male 20% female, while the rest of NYU is the other way around lol.
