GAP production, Floyd Collins, Tues. 2/21 through 2/25, Shop Theater.

I’ll be there for the Sat. evening performance, so wave if you see me. Don’t know how it’s going because my son is too busy to say more than a few words even when we do connect.

Performance: 4 By 4 By Richard

02/21/06-2/25/06
8:00pm

Location:
Abe Burrows Theatre, 1st Floor

A new musical featuring the music of Richard Rodgers and his collaborators. Conceived and directed by Arthur Bartow; Musical Direction by Jack Lee; Choreographed by Lori Leshner. This Mainstage production is presented by the Drama Department.

its interesting. mr. bartow was my singing/acting auditioner, and ms. leshner was the dance auditioner. i'm glad to see that the really important people see the prospective students.

Jasmom....I wish I could see the production your son has worked on. Best of luck to him. My D is accompanying another GAP show, Full Monty, next month and I don't think we can see that either :(. She was asked to musical direct a GAP show for next year, Into the Woods, but I don't know if she will or not, as she'll want to audition for shows (on stage), unless she figures a way to do both (not at same time of course). I also wish I could see 4 by 4!

Chris, Lori Leshner teaches Jazz Dance at CAP21 and she teaches at least the top two (of four) levels for freshmen, and may teach all four, not sure. So, you likely will have her next year for jazz! My D loves her. Lori is also a choreographer at other theaters outside of NYU as well as at NYU. I believe she has also taught at Broadway Dance Center.

Sooz, I know it's so hard for them to budget their energies. I'm sure my s is chomping at the bit to be on stage. But I can't wait to hear how his directing experience has been.
I know your daughter is in much demand for her many talents. Too bad about not seeing the Full Monty. Maybe my s will catch it even if we can't. I thought this thread might keep us all up to date about the theater happenings.

I have never seen a NYU show so I'd really like to! Hopefully I will by next year and hopefully my D will be in one at some point. I'd like to see Full Monty because for one thing, she has worked on it and is playing in it, though not on stage. But also two of the leads are older friends (seniors) of hers from theater camp who I know (she's been in shows with them when younger) and another lead ironically went to my other D's theater camp and was a lead in a show she was in many years ago. We were trying to figure a way to see it but it is unlikely. At the start of the production week, we actually will see our NYU D perform, but ironically she is performing at Brown (where my other D attends but won't be there unfortunately when we go). The NYU D's a capella group, The N'Harmonics, will be competing in the a capella quarterfinals at Brown. So, we'll see that. We saw her perform with them at Smith two weeks ago and these are the only times we'll see our D all semester as she is going with Tisch Scholars to Kentucky over spring break. That same week, assuming my older D's ski team makes Nationals, we will travel to Maine to see her in that. I don't see how we will be able to also to go NYC that same week for Full Monty, plus have tickets here I bought a long time ago to see Forbidden Broadway. It doesn't look good. If she were performing in it, I'm sure we would not miss it and would likely see it instead of the a capella concert.

Like your son, my D enjoys directing and she also enjoys musical directing and choreographing. She has also enjoyed accompanying Full Monty and thinks the musical director for that show is fantastic. I know she'd love to musical direct a GAP show but I'd hate to see it take the place of being in a show but I haven't really heard the details (like you say, they never have time to really talk!) and I think she was thinking if she could to it so it wouldn't preclude the opportunities to audition for particular shows next year. I really don't know. I know her and she'd love to musically direct Into the Woods AND also be in shows. Hard to do it all (though they try, LOL).

If your son directed this semester, maybe he can perform this summer? This is the first time, in a very long time, that my D has not been working on a show (on stage) but she has never mentioned missing it as she is having such a great time at Tisch and actually IS performing with N'Harmonics. She also is assistant musical director for the group and she arranged one of their new songs herself. She truly likes that process a lot. However, she's going for the stage at this point. As you know, it is so hard to make it on stage, and it can't hurt that they are interested in and have a penchant for other related areas, if need be, down the line. Hopefully, she will be in summer stock this summer and return to the stage.

I wonder if my D will be seeing Floyd Collins...I will have to ask her. She saw a GAP show in the fall, Bat Boy, and thought it was very professionally done and lots of talent. Even when she applied to Tisch, the idea of being involved in GAP shows was appealing. Hopefully, one day she can be in one. I've only heard real good things about them. Let us know about the show after you see it!!

We were supposed to see 4 by 4 tonight; alas, it is sold out! :(
Maybe we'll see it next week. i didn't know about Floyd Collins, though! We definitely can't see both...

rossji,
We, too, were interested in 4 by 4 and I was contemplating trying for both. Guess I'd better decide soon (although by now tickets may be sparce.
Sooz,
I'm certain s will somehow/somewhere be on stage this summer, if he's not successful through Strawhat, he'll do something locally.
The gods smiled on us re: the timing of Floyd Collins. We were actually planning to be in NYC that weekend for an audition for a summer dance intensive (my 15 y.o. d). And, her school is in recess next week.
Sometimes it just works out!

To Jasmom...guess what? My daughter just called while walking and rushing (what else is new?) from her rehearsal for her singing group to Tisch as she is going to the invited dress rehearsal this evening of Floyd Collins! She said she has some friends in it, including the boy who is playing Floyd Collins who happens to be in her singing group, The N'Harmonics. She was telling me he was assistant musical director of her group but with his show and all, she had now become Assistant Musical Director of the group. I told her that my CC friend's son is directing it (I don't know his name!) and she said she doesn't know the director. I'll have to tell you what she says about the production (when she calls the next time she is walking some place!)

RossJi....my daughter saw 4 by 4 last night. She tried to get student rush to Chita's A Dancer's Life and I didn't know she ended up instead at 4 by 4 and so I said, I thought it was sold out (cause you said that) and she said, it wasn't. She said the songs in the show were more obscure ones of Rodgers. She mentioned some of the excellent talent, including a second year CAP student and two very good dancers.

When I read this thread before, I didn't know my D was seeing either show but I guess she did! Jasmom....I'll have to get back to you!
Susan

Hi Susan - didn't mean to confuse you! The show was sold out for FRIDAy night; we couldn't have gone last night. I'm sorry if I lead you to believe it was sold out for EVERY night! So glad she was able to see it! We will try to see either that or Floyd Collins. Tell me what she thinks! (or I'll have my daughter ask her in vocal tech!) Thanks for the info!

It likely was a crazy day for him. Invited dress started at 8 PM. My D is never in either. The hours they keep are insane and then they have all this schoolwork to do as well. They ain't complaining, as they love it. Sleep is another story. I just found out that they don't have classes tomorrow. I guess that helps. My D has a very good friend auditioning for Tisch tomorrow so something already has filled her day and night anyway as he'll be visiting with her.

Jasmom,
You heard it here first, LOL. It is late at night, following dress rehearsal of your son's show, Floyd Collins. My D happened to IM me. She says the show was AMAZING (the caps were hers), truly WONDERFUL. The actors' performances were amazing in her opinion. I don't want to mention the names of friends of hers who she pointed out. As I said, the lead who played Floyd Collins is in her singing group. I don't know the musical myself or the parts the others played that she mentioned, only their real names but she said how great their performances were. She said the music was fantastic (she has not seen this musical before). She thought the production was well designed with cool sets and lighting. She said the direction was real good too :D ! Sounds like a hit. What a triumph for your son, and his cast. Congrats and pass it onto him from a fellow Tisch student. Sounds like you will be in for a treat, plus thrills as a mom.

Susan,
So kind of you to pass this along! If I ever reach s, I'll let him know. His roommate is the designer, so I'll send word to him as well. I can't wait to talk to s about what it's like to direct such talented and motivated bunch. I remain in awe of all that these students accomplish on top of their academics.
On Thur. son's former voice teacher (and major mentor) is headed down to catch the performance. Sounds like my son will have reason to be proud.
And your daughter sounds like a sweetheart!

Your son should be REAL proud. To be at he healm of a show that my D called amazing and she has seen a LOT of shows, it does sound phenomenal. She referred to several of the performances as phenomenal as well as those other aspects of the production. I can't believe I have never seen a NYU show but I imagine it will be a treat when I do. My D has spoken highly of the many talented kids she has met at Tisch. I've only seen her singing group, N'Harmonics, and those kids can really sing but that's all I have seen. It is really great that a former teacher and mentor will see your son's work. And yes, please let him know to tell his roomie that my D says the designer's work really stood out.

Hmmmm... they sure don't make it easy to get tickets! I searched the NYU and Tisch websites; nary a mention of Floyd Collins. What's the number for tickets? My d is home now so she can't ask anyone. (she'll be heading back tonight). We want to see it Sat. night, the 25th. Please let me know! Thx!

Don't think I can be of much help. I left message with s asking for a ticket number. But...I don't know if he's checking messages.
I did make reservations for 4 by 4 for Sat night, so as of this morning THEY still had tickets. FC is in such a tiny theater, I don't know what's still available.

Floyd Collins?! I didn't know they were doing that, I only knew about The Full Monty.

Maybe I'll try to go.. it helps to live a half hour train ride away. We'll see. Its probobly sold out.

I auditioned for that this summer at my camp, Frenchwoods. I was one of 10 girls that got called back for Nellie. After five hours and four more cuts, only one other girl and I were left. After two more grueling hours of "Through the Mountain," they called it a day.

I found out the next morning that the seven hour callback had gone to nill- I hadn't gotten the part. At least I know the song REALLY well now- can't win em all!

I still love this show though... is anyone going?

Thespian Dreams, I didn't know you went to Frenchwoods. My older D went there for four summers and really loved it. I know what you mean about the callback process there. She once was called back for Reno in Anything Goes but didn't get it but was one of the Angels. Stagedoor doesn't have a callback process for casting, just for the cabaret. Actually FWF has the callback for the cabaret too and my older D one year got that callback but also didn't make it in. But you know, you have to realize that you did very well and obviously had the talent to be considered to the very end for that role. Feel good about that. Often at that point, it becomes beyond the talent factor and more who they feel is right for the part or might be right with other cast members and you can't do much about those things. Even your look or type will play a factor at that point. Sounds like you are very talented so keep on track.

I imagine it will be very difficult to obtain tickets for these GAP shows. The theaters are small and just those associated with the show and who (family, friends, industry people) they have coming to see them in it, can fill the space.

Thanks Suzie! I didn't know your D wen't to frenchwoods either! Yeah, callbacks can get nasty there. Other 'final two but unsuccessful' callbacks I had there were for Man Of La Mancha (Aldonza), Edwin Drood (Rosa), Gypsy (Louise), and The Most Happy Fella, for Marie. None of them went as long as the one for Floyd Collins did, though.

It was kind of like a curse. It finally broke my last session there when I finally got Fantine in Les Miserables. That was unexpected, and fun.

Back on track-

I guess I won't be seeing Floyd Collins then. Oh well.

ThespianDreams, it certainly sounds like you've done very well. Fantine must have been a great role. My D who went to FWF for four years is not the one pursuing MT now, however. It is my other D.

For GAP shows, please do at least try to see what you can do for tickets and I didn't mean to be discouraging. I know how hard it is to get them, that's all.
