NYU Productions

Hi Again Everybody,

Once again, have a great time this weekend. I better make one correction to my last post. My daughter was cast in the play at Strasberg; but the musical revue, I believe, is a result of one of her courses in her Junior year, or people from the studio that are in Singing and are required to participate in the Revue. As you can see I am not clear on this, but I don't believe she auditioned, although, again, I am not sure. Let's all hope she doesn't get on CC and read this. She doesn't particularly like that I post, and maybe this is why. Anyhow, I don't know whether it is a show that is ticketed or parents and friends are just invited to come see their students or what it is exactly. I'll find out from her the next time I talk to her. I know they had to change the date once already, so my gut says it is going to be small audience format.

I wish I could live in NYC!!! :) D would not like that one bit :(
even though she does love us.

Have a great time this weekend.

Theatredivasmom

OK

I just left Skirball (where HAIR was performed) and I must say that it was incredible. I am so incredibly glad I was able to see it. It is a bit experimental, but wow, the show was a tour de force. You all are in for a treat this weekend.

Chris

Jashner, I'm somewhere in D (I too won't know until I pick up the ticket). Maybe we'll meet up at one of the "announced" seats.
Sooz, I sent you an email (via the CC link) several days ago. Don't know if you got it though. I'll be traveling for the next couple of days--may not have web access. So if I'm silent 'till Sat, that's why.
Chris, I'm so glad you posted. I've been a bit on edge wondering how it went tonight. I'm excited (but then I'm a Mom so that's a given).

Hmmm... my friend just emailed me and she and her daughter can NOT see Hair with us. Her d just told her she was surprised with Broadway tix from her boyfriend for their 6 month anniversary!! Anybody want to buy them?? It's row D. If interested, let me know and I can meet you at the door.

PS - the tickets are for the 2:00 matinee tomorrow (Sat. Oct 21)

Jasmom, I wrote you back, not sure if you will see it before Saturday!

Chrisnoo, my D told me all about Hair, as well. She says it is an awesome production and that I will like it. She explained the "concept" of this production which is not what the show usually looks like. I won't give away anything she said in case someone wants to wait and see for themselves. There is an article in the Washington Square News.

RossJi, I got your email and will get back to you. I don't know anyone wanting tickets. Your daughter should ask around today at Studio. Another idea is to bring them and ask someone waiting in line for tickets if they'd like to buy them from you. You could always offer a slightly lower price as an incentive.

Susan

Sooz, Just caught a break at my conference, and snagged a passing internet signal. Got your email and will look for you on Sat. Thanks for the tip about WSN. I was fun to read the article. Glad your d enjoyed it!
Hope to say hi to several of you on Sat. (I brought my list of CCers and what's known about their seat 3#s).

Hi, this message is for Susan (soozievt): I have not posted for over a year now, so you may not remember me- in fact my username is confusing because it is alot like the mom who's D went to MT at U of Mich. However my D is currently a third yr. at CAP21-if that helps! Anyway, I went on CC last night to reseach for a friend's daughter who's interested in MT and I found the "NYU productions thread!"

I remembered your posts (which were always thoughtful and inspiring to others) from before and I was always interested in how your D was doing at CAP21. To make a long story short, I saw your daughter in ITW! she was amazing, amazing, amazing! At the time I didn't make the connection that she was your D (keep in mind I had not gone on CC for over a year- and didn't log on until last night) At lunch on Fri., Nov. 10th, I asked my D "who was the beautiful, talented musical director?!" And my D said "oh, she's sooo talented and young too - only 17!" (still I didn't know she was your D!)

Anyway, last night I finally made the connection when I read the post where you said your daughter was the musical director for ITW! My H and I saw the show Wed. night Nov. 8th. My D was in the show as the "evil stepmother!" (in real life she is actually quite sweet) My D was also in last yr's Full Monty as one of the "girlfriends or groupies" - I guess you'd call them.

Anyway, I just had to write! You should be very proud of your D - she is very talented! - Margaret

Margaret, it is always great to hear from parents whose kids are in various college programs. My D (currently a hs junior) is very interested in the CAP21/Tisch program, so if you ever have the time and inclination to post more about your D's experiences there, well, we sure would appreciate it! Anything you could tell us would be great, especially about class size, opportunities to be in productions, the teachers, what it's like to live in NY, etc. Thanks,
L

Margaret,
That was so sweet of you to write about the show and my daughter and I will definitely pass on your positive and kind words to her. It so happens that a student whom I am advising had her ED Tisch Audition yesterday and said that the faculty mentioned the ITW production to the auditionees and how good it was and how it was entirely student run. So, I am going to pass both sets of feedback to her because it is always affirming after working so hard on something, to hear how others viewed your work. My daughter loved working on ITW and put her heart and soul into it for months.

I am now remembering you a little bit from the forum but it has been a while. I figure so many of us on the forum's kids are going to cross paths at some point and indeed our girls have. My daughter actually worked on Full Monty last year playing keyboard and so would know your D from that. I did not have the fortune to see that production but heard it was great and I know some of the leads that were in it as they had gone to theater camp with my D and she had done shows with them in the past.

Your daughter was fabulous in ITW! She is also a beautiful girl and so she pulled off "evil" well considering she is so pretty herself. She did a great job portraying that character. In fact, I recall my D telling me that the girl who played the stepmother was "undercast" in the sense that she is so talented that the role did not get to truly reveal her talents to the full extent. I thought the show was wonderful and each person was very good. It appeared so perfectly cast too. Besides excellent singing voices, what struck me is how well each person could act. I also credit how the production team put it together and the challenge of staging it on such a SMALL stage! I wish they had a bigger theater space for the GAP shows. It is a shame how many people they have to turn away who cannot get in to see the shows, even with 8 performances.

I saw the show on opening night, Monday night. My daughter said that actually Wednesay and Thursday nights were the least best nights. As you must know, on Wednesday, the actor playing the Narrator fell ill and at the last minute, the director had to step in to play the part, having never rehearsed it himself. I give him loads of credit. While he directed the show, he has a musical theater background. He played Tony when my D was Anita in West Side Story during the summer of 2004. Also, as I am sure you have heard, at one of the weekend shows (I think it was the weekend, or near the end of the run), several cast members' wallets and cell phones were stolen from backstage and they learned of it just before the show began, a very tough situation. My D had her belongings by the piano. I feel badly for these kids and I hope your D was not one of them.

Thank your D for her nice comments about my daughter. Yes, my D is young but actually she turned 18 a month ago, during the rehearsal period, so she is no longer 17, finally. She is a sophomore in CAP21 and absolutely loves the program and is having a great time and learning lots. She learned a lot by musically directing ITW, as well as playing piano and conducting the orchestra for the show. Perhaps one day our girls will be on stage together. I know that my daughter thinks your D is very talented. From what I could tell in this role, she certainly is! The whole cast was great.

Thanks once again for posting and getting in touch.
Susan

Hi NotMamaRose,
I would be happy to highlight experiences at CAP21 regarding your post. However, having just recently returned to the forum, I want to abide by the rules and since this is the "NYU Productions" page I will for now not stray too far off topic. If there is any other place I could address those topics I would be happy to do so. I will say that my D absolutely loves Tisch, Cap21, NYC, her teachers, etc.!!

There are tons of shows. Can't audition / or be cast for all so one needs to be prudent. It takes time to figure it all out. I will say this, it is wise that freshman are not allowed to auditon the first year - it would be way too much on their plate!

The productions are first rate and the students are very talented. Its amazing that many are more than just triple threat as in the case of Susan's D! Not only is she in CAP with the assets they require, but, she is musically gifted as well. Also, I have noticed a crossover in students who are in "acting" studios who are cast in the musical theatre shows. They are not just actors it seems they too are triple threats- for instance one boy who was in ITW from Playrights - was recently in Footloose in LA (and he could sing too!); as well as another boy (with an amazing voice) was from Strasberg! ( I hope I got that straight).

Regarding productions, like Susan said in an earlier post - something to the effect about students needing to stay "tuned in" to when audition slots go up so that they are sure to sign up and get a spot - that's certainly the case. Also, they need to be savy in scheduling potentially conflicting preliminary auditions with call backs for other shows - sometimes there are conflicting overlaps - hard to be in 2 places at once particularly in NYC!

No wonder I only talk with my D when she is on the street walking!!!
Hope this helped. - Margaret

Hi Susan, thanks for replying to my post. I look forward to hearing more great things about your D's experience at CAP. Also look forward to seeing her in the productions!
Take care. - Margaret

Margaret,

You don't have an e-mail or pm listed so I thought I would just come out and ask...by any chance did your daughter play Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street at a NC community theater? I was thinking we may know who your daughter is, but then again NC is a big state so maybe not. My d was in that production in the tap ensemble as she was only in 9th grade at the time and is now auditioning this year for college MT programs. If she is who I am thinking, your d was just wonderfully talented in that and I am so glad to hear that she is doing shows at NYU and all is going well!

Kathie (kaysmom)

Hi Kathie, Yes, Caroline played Peggy Sawyer in CTG's production of 42nd Street in the spring of 2004! Wow, its a small world! And what a good memory you have! Good luck to you and your daughter - its a stressful time auditioning for MT programs! I wish her all the luck! I hope you are hanging in there as well - for its tough for the parents too. - Margaret

mttheatremom & soozievt,
My s is home so I've been able to elicit a little news. He saw ITW, proclaimed it awesome. He found all really talented. Commented that the production did a great job playing up the humorous aspects of ITW. He loved the evil stepmom, was impressed with the music, and had alot of fun seeing friends on stage --the grandmother (and others I can't remember). A winner! (He doesn't tend to be very effusive)

Hi Everybody,

I had fun the other day catching up reading the past few weeks posts. Then my daughter came home for Thanksgiving, as a surprise, and I mean SURPRISE, early Christmas gift to her father and me. She bought her own ticket and made all the arrangements herself. She was worried we were going to surprise her in NYC and we would each be at the other locale without the other. We were so happy. She flew in Wednesday and flew back earlier this evening. Anyway, I was asking about ITW and mentioned that I had seen a post that there might have been a young man from Stasberg in it; she said yes, it was her friend whom she had gone to see in summer stock this summer with another girlfriend from Strasberg who had come to visit us for a week this past summer. She said he has an incredible voice and is quite a fine actor also.

Anyways, we're getting excited to see her in just two short weeks in NYC. She's going to be in the musical revue that her class from Strasberg is doing and I did find out today that there will be tickets available to the public. It's at Strasberg in their theatre. I'm so excited to see her in any kind of production. She is opening the show. Can't wait. It's been two years since I've heard her sing on stage (she sang at my nephew's wedding this summer, it was lovely but not quite the same) and even though it's not a musical, I'll take a revue. She says she sings four times. Hope it goes well for all of them; since it is a class, it's quite an undertaking. Also looking forward to Christmastime in NYC. Hope everybody had a blessed Thanksgiving.

Kristin (Theatredivas mom)

GAAHH... well, it's official. Tix for Parade are all sold out :(
I can't even get tickets for my parents. Boy, are they gonna be bummed! I actually went on the website at 12:01 a.m., the SECOND they opened it for tickets, and STILL couldn't get any. Boo hoo.

RossJi...I feel your pain! I am actually not surprised, however. I wish it were not true. But I saw this with Into the Woods. That sold out within a minute or so as well. When I went to see the show, I could see why. The "theater" where they put the student run GAP shows on is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO small! It is a real shame, in my opinion. The students put countless hours for months into the production and so many people who WANT to see it cannot. I know they put on 8 performances for Into the Woods and the tickets were accounted for immediately. Lots of people wanted to see it but could not. Wait to you see the theater space. I imagine it is in the same space called The Shop. The performance space is very small. The audience can only seat about 40 people! I don't understand why they can't have the use of a bigger space and a real stage. I recently saw my daughter's performance of an original mini musical she had written and performed in with Tisch Scholars. They put THAT on in a MUCH MUCH bigger space with a real stage....in the building where Skirball is located. I don't know how many it seated....my guess is at least 300. Also a much larger performance space. I can understand if they can't get the huge and beautiful Skirball but it would be nice if there was something between the two extremes. Like I said, the space where my D put on her musical with Tisch Scholars would have been great for a GAP show.

Best of luck to your D in Parade and I can't wait to hear about it. My D's show of Jesus Christ Superstar is in April but I haven't heard of when or how to get tickets. At least, I think, it is not as tiny of a space as where GAP shows are put on, though I have yet to see the theater. It is a faculty directed show open to all of Tisch but put on at Strasberg.

I think it is really sad that a student's own grandparents can't see the show. I know with ITW, each participant was able to draw up a list of tickets needed for family. I think all family was accommodated. I don't know how Parade handled their tickets, however. Hopefully, your D was able to request tickets for her parents at the least. You did get tix, right?

Hi SoozieVT!! Thanks for your sympathy!! I think I know which theater it's in (if you can call it a theater, lol!) If it's the same one that Smile was in, it is MICROSCOPIC (don't remember which one that was). I didn't know your daughter wrote a musical! How exciting!! I don't think my daughter did, either, or else she probably would have told me! Too bad I missed it. :( We DID, in fact, get 3 tickets for the Sat. matinee; each cast member got 3 tickets, which is perfect for us (my husband, daughter, and me). But my Mom is a little bummed out! I didn't want her to travel all that way with a SLIM chance that she would get a seat. Anyway, TTY soon!

RossJi, yeah that likely is the same theater. It is called The Shop theater.

Yes, my daughter wrote a mini musical and composed all the songs and wrote the lyrics and musically directed it and played the lead in it. She did this with Tisch Scholars and it so happened to be the night right after her Jerome Kern Revue show at CAP21, so that I was able to go down to NYC and see both shows back to back on one trip. Then, five days later, her a capella group, The N'Harmonics, was in the Northeast Quarterfinals in Hartford, CT (I just realized I should have told you if you wanted to see it, sorry) and we went to CT to see it as we were further south in our state already that weekend at a race that my other D was in and we drove all over, LOL. N'Harmonics came in first, and it was great (I saw them win it last year at Brown too). My D had written the arrangements and musically directed two of the three songs entered in the competition and the best soloist and percussionist of the event won on her song, as happened last year (different song though). The soloist was a girl you know of in their class in CAP21 (was in Hair). Now they go onto the Semi Finals at Yale but my D has to miss it unfortunately because I think that is her tech weekend for Jesus Christ Superstar. It will be hard to win that but the winner goes to the International Finals at Lincoln Center.

I wish I could see Parade but I am schlepping all over the country lately to just my own kids' events. Next up is my older D in the National Collegiate Ski Championships in CO. I owe you and many, many people emails and I am so sorry about not keeping up but I have been traveling a lot, was recently in CA, and have no internet when I travel. When I have been home, I have been busy with clients and have to put all those emails first. I hope to catch up soon.
