NYU Regular Decision 2018 Discussion

I’m kind of confused as to what the financial aid stuff means. I have a Spring Federal PLUS Loan 1, Unsubsidized Loan 1, and Fall Federal Loan 1. They add up to $66,600. But these are loans, so I need to pay them back right? Is this common for NYU?

@dontrejectme
That’s the exact amount I received in my financial aid package. Loan packages are common for any college.

But some of those loans are better than others. My parents already have some PLUS loans from when my older brother was in college. I don’t like them, since they’re loans that your parents have to start paying back immediately. Those loans are probably the first ones you should avoid.

I’ve been adding up the numbers, and if I don’t dorm, I can essentially go to school for free and without loans (there will be about $3,000 left over if I don’t take out any of the loans, so if you need a loan, the Perkins Loan is the best to take if you have it, followed by the Subsidized Stafford Loan).

Of course, I live in the area, so this isn’t that hard of a decision to make for me. Most people would prefer to dorm. But at least keep that option in mind. You could probably find a place to rent outside of Manhattan that would significantly reduce costs, especially if you find a roommate.

Good recommendations, solid essay, pretty good ecs
Also, I applied to NYU Shanghai if that helped me get into NYU

Please know that when an applicant has asked us to do so in their application materials, we consider candidates for admission to each of our campuses in NYU’s global network, which includes our portal campuses in New York, Abu Dhabi and Shanghai as well as global academic centers in Florence, London, and Paris. Your offer of admission is extended with the expectation that you will spend your freshman year in Florence.

Does this mean I must attend my first year in Florence… Or can I somehow attend NYU in NY

Does anyone else’s financial aid still say ‘award access not available’?

I still have no decision, no email, no portal decision either. Now I have to wait till Monday this is so stupid.

My financial aid still says “award access not available” @book05. Should I/we be worried?

@auberginedreams someone in the Facebook group said that happened to her and when she called, they told her she didn’t qualify for any aid… there are quite a few who are still waiting on financial aid so let’s try and stay positive! I emailed them and expect to hear back monday/tuesdayish

It doesn’t allow me to log in to Albert… Is this because I got wait listed?

only 10K per year of fin aid. Cost of attendance per year approx $66K. it is just so expensive… just to think debt of $200,000 plus by time of graduation plus plan to attend grad school, making it very difficult for middle class income to afford even with a family of 3 students (one already in college, and the other one in 2 years). minimal consideration there as well… sigh… :-S

I have a question you guys. They gave me a 50,000 Stern Scholarship, plus 5760 from Pell Grant. In total 55,760 aid. Since the tuition is 44,000, would I get the money back? The money left over?

Also, is that guaranteed if I keep my grades up throughout the four years?

Just from what I’ve read here, @melanie9d , you have to resubmit FAFSA every year to see what you get. I’m not sure about CSS, since it seems to be what they base institutional merit aid/scholarships/grants upon. My guess would be that you have to resubmit the CSS each year, too, to see what you get. But I know as little as you, so don’t bet on that. There have been warnings on these forums that aid can be less generous after freshman year, so there is the chance that the subsequent years’ aid will not equal what you’ve been awarded for the coming year.

I don’t know if you’d be allowed to keep the leftover - are you calculating in room/board/fees/books in that $44K? My total cost for CAS is $66,600 per year and I can’t imagine that Stern would be less expensive.

My plan is to work as hard as I can my freshman year, get to know professors and staff in my chosen major, and hopefully learn about scholarships that are major-specific to offset any decreases in merit aid in the years after freshman year. I could be naive in hoping for this, but we shall see.

I’m not planning to stay on campus… That’s why @schoolapalooza . I’m gonna room with someone off campus. The fees are included in the 45 thousand or so.

Thank you so much for your answer though! :)

Anyone still have award access not available? Hoping this doesn’t mean I get nothing at all.

@theryanc
I still have that message. I emailed the financial aid office. Will let you know what they reply

Wait… $66K??? I’m an ED II, but Albert still says $60K for me… It must be different by school

what is the average fiancial aid award? i got $37 k and wondering if that was rare? thanks:)

Waitlisted Stern
SAT: 2270
UW GPA: 3.9
DECA 2x International Qualifier, Chapter President, Regional VP
Microsoft Intern (year long, apparently this didn’t help me much…)
Managed purchases for library system’s IT department for 1 year and did research work to improve Outreach service
Over 600 hrs of volunteer work

I’m devastated. I loved NYU when I visited and it was one of my favorite universities. Stern was beautiful, the proximity/recruiting to Wall St was glorious, I don’t even know anymore… Plus it didn’t help I got 5 other rejections/waitlists on the same day.
