Hi:
I already know about the numerous financial aid appeal threads here. However, all of them deal with appeals submitted by recently accepted students. Is NYU STERN or NYU in general more generous with students who already finished their first year, and will be submitting an appeal for financial aid for their sophomore year. I am submitting an appeal because I no longer have a sponsor who was paying for %50 percent of the cost after the financial aid package. Additionally, I am also an international student, so it is not that easy for me to get a loan.

Your visa would also be reliant on your sponsorship?

NYU does not give good financial aid, especially in the second year. Try the appeal, but, beware, that they may not offer anything.

For others reading this thread who might be considering going this route (sponsor), as you can see, a friend or relative can suddenly pull their support for a variety of reasons.

@markerd Is the sponsor going to help with second semester or did he only help with Fall semester?

You had to show funds for your visa…where are those funds?

??

You wrote this 2 1/2 years ago

Are you still a sophomore now?

He is going to help me for the second semester too, I’m okay for the first year. But after the first year I will no longer received funding from that person. Regarding that post you mentioned, I wrote it when I was a sophomore in high school. I was just curious about how financial aid worked for international students. I basically just want to know how colleges perceive when a student looses a sponsor and is no longer able to cover the cost of college. Additionally, since international students cannot apply to student loans as easily as american citizens can, is it possible a school might be more generous to international students in terms of grants and scholarships.

@auntbea how do you know NYU does not offer good financial aid especially in the second year?

From NYU’s website: "International Students: “NYU offers limited financial support in the form of institutional grants/scholarships to international freshmen admitted to our New York campus beginning with the Fall 2013 term. Grants/scholarships will be based upon a combination of financial need and academic merit. Students who are not U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens and who wish to be considered for institutional financial aid when applying for admission to the NYU New York campus should complete ONLY the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE to be considered for institutional financial aid funds. International students cannot apply for financial support after they are admitted.”

Now that you are already a student, NYU will not change your financial aid. You will need to find a new sponsor.

Yes, I read that. But, it says that students cannot apply for financial aid after they are accepted. My situation is different, I already have financial aid, I just need more aid.

Good luck. NYU admitted you…with a certain amount of money…and the school does not guarantee to meet full need for students…and they don’t.

Go talk to someone at NYU about this. I’m sure you aren’t the first international student who has faced a lack of funding in subsequent years. See what NYU says.

Maybe it is time to consider applying as a transfer to a cheaper school for Fall 2015. Start with finding the answer to this question: How much can you and your family pay per year without a sponsor?

You need to direct your questions to the NYU office of financial aid. From what I have seen, you’re chances of getting signifcant aid, is small. But they are the ones to determine that. We can all speculate but can’t help you.
