NYU Stern, Cornell, SUNY, CUNY

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it :)
I am a junior in a top 100 high school and I don't have many of my AP/SAT scores yet.
Stuff to note: my school limits APs to 3 per year (got guidance counselor's permission for 4 during senior year), limits 1 ap for sophomore year, and has only 3 honors classes available.

GPA: 3.5 unweighted
SAT: 1990 (1390 CR+M): CR: 710, W: 600, M:680
PSAT (sophomore): 187
Honors Sophomore: English
AP's Sophomore: European History (4)
AP's Junior: US History, US Government, English Language
AP's Senior: Comparative Government, English Literature, Economics, Calculus AB
SAT II's: US History, Math II, Literature
College Level Classes (excluding AP's): Intro to Engineering (9th), Digital Electronics (10th), Constitutional Law (11th), Criminal Procedure/Civil Law (12th), Forensic Criminology/Science (12th), Criminal Law/Legal Ethics (12th).

Extra-Curriculars:
- JV Wrestling (9th, 10th): JV Award, competed in Freestyle/Greco state championship
- Varsity (11th, 12th): Varsity Award, will compete in same championship
- Red Cross Club: 150+ volunteer hours
- Actor in Independent Horror Film (unfinished, will be submitted to various film festivals).

Extra Stuff:
- New York City resident
- White, male
- First-generation American (family from Uzbekistan, if that helps)
- middle class (probably upper middle)
- Parents have college degrees from Uzbekistan (am i still considered a first-generation college student?)
- Major: Economics, Business Administration, or Pre-law most likely

Colleges:
NYU Stern (#1 Choice)
NYU CAS
Cornell
SUNY Binghamton
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Stony
CUNY Baruch
Macaulay Honors
Pace
U of Chicago (just for fun)
Boston College
Boston University

How are my chances? Any advice? Thanks a lot :)

You have a competent profile of good courses and nice EC’s, but a better SAT score could make you a strong applicant. 1990 is good for several of your choices, but instead of taking a risky step to go forward with these scores, I would rather recommend to improve your SAT scores. For Cornell, this score is no where nearer to win an admission.

Good Luck!!

Try to reach the 2000-2100 mark or even a little higher(for Cornell) if possible

thanks a lot for the advice! I’m taking the SAT again right after i get my junior PSAT score back. Do most schools care about the writing score that much? I can’t seem to bring it up very high in any of my practice tests :P

bumpity bump bump

Im just gonna speak about the schools i know
NYU Stern (#1 Choice)- get the SAT up and you may have a chance. Same goes for the CAS, you never know though
NYU CAS
Cornell- probably not, its very competitive, but give it a shot
U of Chicago (just for fun) - same as Cornell
Boston College - Another good school but not as competitive so you should get in as long as your grades are good
Boston University- I’d say youre good for BU

thanks, much appreciated! anyone else have any advice?

bumpppppppppp

NYU, UChicago, Boston and Cornell all seem unlikely as of now. (Since your ECs arent VERY impressive), increasing your test score wouldnt hurt. A 2100+ would make you competitive for the above said schools!
All the best ! :)

Chance back? Thanks !

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1411650-chance-indian-hypd-cornell-mit-will-chance-back.html

Thanks a lot! Can’t really do much for the EC’s, wrestling literally takes up all my time (18 hours a week, 40 weeks a year) :stuck_out_tongue:
Also, if it helps, I’ll be an AP Scholar with Honor by the end of the year, and an AP Scholar with Distinction by senior year. I’ll also get an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors by the end of this year (i doubt non-NY colleges will care about this one).

Youre welcome. Mind returning the favor? :stuck_out_tongue: (Shameless self promotion)
Yes I can understand, I am sort of an athlete myself  Its good you stuck to the one EC you really liked!

I think taking more high level classes certainly helps you, especially since you did the hardest possible at a tough high school. If you could give where you project to be on the PSAT, that would be very helpful to us in chancing you.

@guyinblue : Haha, sure buddy, I’ll chance you as well as I can

@Apollo: Thanks a lot! I got a 2200 on my last SAT practice, so my guess is anywhere between 200 and 210 for my PSAT?

You’re from Uzbekistan? That’s crazy, so am I! Anyway…

NYU Stern - If you retake your SAT and get into 2100+, I think you’ll have a good shot!

Cornell- Your GPA is a little low, but if you get your SAT high enough, maybe? Cornell is sometimes weird with admissions. My friend with a 3.6 got in last year and she didn’t have very good ECs. Since you’re a junior, you have time to get more ECs…

U of Chicago - Same as above!
Boston College - Better chance than Cornell.
Boston University- Low reach.

I think you have time to maybe raise your GPA a bit as well as your SAT and ECs. Good luck!

Btw, I was wondering about the first generation college thing as well, considering my parents’ degrees were from the USSR.

Also, it’s good you’re from Uzbekistan. It’s considered a third world country. It also is severely lacking in human rights and has a repressive govt. That’s a goldmine for your college essays.

That’s crazy haha. i was born in the US, but my entire family’s from Tashkent. Anyway, thanks a lot for the chance!

I noticed weird things from Cornell too. A kid from my school got in with a 1990 SAT and an 85 average (out of 100) yet another kid with a 95 and a 2100 got rejected. Strange :P

Didn’t see your reply, but I was born in the US, so I doubt that’s gonna work all too well LOL

UChicago and Cornell are high reaches. NYU Stern is a reach right now but if you do better on your SATs it could become more of a match. You look good for everything else though! Chance me back for Columbia ED!

Thank you! and I chanced you back
Do you know what SAT range NYU stern is looking for?

Here’s my schedule for my 4 years (forgot i didn’t post it before). I go to an engineering based high school but took a concentration in Law after my sophomore year.

Freshmen- Global I, Freshmen English, Geometry, Biology, Spanish II, Intro to Engineering.

Sophomore- AP European History, English Honors, Trig, Chemistry, Spanish III, Digital Electronics.

Junior- AP US History (w/ Western Political Thought), AP English Language, Pre-Cal, Physics, AP US Government (w/ Constitutional Law).

Senior- AP Comparative Government, AP English Literature, AP Calculus AB, Criminal Procedure/Civil Law, Forensic Criminology/Science, Criminal Law/Legal Ethics.
