@ImASenior2 … my son just got into NYU stern (class of 2023). Just want to provide some insight. He applied Stern RD got rejected and later he got accepted from waitlist. My spouse is a NYU stern graduate so I assume legacy status did not help him for his RD application.
His high school stat: went to a top public HS in NYC, GPA unweighted around 94%, SAT 1570 (E770, M800), SAT2 - math2 800, physics 760, USH 740, he took 10 APs (6 thru junior yr all 5s, 4 in senior yr - 2 4s 2 5s).
He just finished his first week of NYU stern orientation. He told me during orientation the president says class of 2023 Stern admission rate was 7% (year b4 was 8%). Total Stern accepted 600, 50 in the BPE program. My son is in the BPE program. Based on what he says most admitted students are from ED1 and ED2. Very few are from RD. So I assume Stern ED1 and ED2 chances are much much higher but make sure you are ok with the tuition.
Few tips on AP classes - He took AP Biology so he gets 8 credits from the elective. He took AP French so he gets waive the foreign language 4 credit. He took AP stat and he needs to take a NYU stat placement test to see if he can waive the fundamental Stat class 4 credit (just found out today he passed the placement test) and he only needs to take the regression stat class 2 credit. Unfortunately his AP Mico Econ and Macro Econ can not waive his NYU Econ classes. I believe Stern core classes can not be waived. So long story short. If you get accepted into Stern ED1/ED2 take a look at the Stern AP placement sheet and see which AP classes are most beneficial to you to take in May 2020. AP classes (score of 4 or 5) can save you big $.
I hope this message helps.
Good luck.
I’m taking 5 APs this year alongside the 6 I listed above (Lit, Macro, Micro, Stats, Chem) and Multivariable Calculus. Based off of ECs and stats, from your own exp. or from your son’s exp, if I apply ED1, would you say I have a good shot at making it? I’m not applying to the Business and Political Economy program so idk how well you’d know but if you are willing to share, that would mean a lot. Thnx!!
@ImASenior2 … if Stern is your #1 pick then ED is definitely the way to go. There are many smart kids apply here. My son is taking lot of tough classes in his senior year like Multi calculus, AP Micro Econ, AP Macro Econ, AP Literature, AP Stat … etc. On top of that my wife is a Stern graduate (legacy status) and that won’t get him in RD. Stern takes most kids from the ED1 and EDII round. Good luck to you.
@ImASenior2 … One more thing, by looking at your AP classes and if you are able to get in Stern. You can waive out lot of credits. Make sure to take AP Stat in May and make sure you get a 4 or 5. Your AP Spanish (4) can waive out the 4 credits foreign language, Your BC cal can waive out the Calculus class 4 credits. I am not sure on Physics 1 can give you 8 credits on natural science elective. My son use his AP Biology to waive out 8 credits elective. Your Micro & Macro Econ does not matter to Stern as no credit will be given to Stern Core classes. These will save you lot of $ and hopefully you get focus on your core study. Hope this help.
Your stats look very similar to mine. I got in ED for the class of 2023. Definitely recommend applying early decision as most of my class got in early as well and it really takes the stress off senior year as your friends nervously await their decisions while you’re secured. I know people with similar stats who got waitlisted or rejected too though, which is why you need to nail your why NYU essay and show them you’re serious about Stern and a good fit for the school. Message me if you have any questions and good luck! Hopefully, I’ll see you on campus.
If you are willing to share, what does the tuition look like for you and your classmates? My family makes around 120k and that places me above the highest bracket, but that coupled with ED makes me fear the idea of getting little to no aid.
NYU is not generous on aid. There are a handful of merit awards for top scholars but other than aid is need-based, and they don’t claim to meet full need. Run the NPC on the website, but be aware that if there are assets that will be stated on the CSS (the NPC on the website only runs on income) the NPC will be understated. I don’t believe applying ED will disadvantage you aid-wise, as it is need based. https://www.nyu.edu/financial.aid/misc/npc/
You cannot infer your chances from RD acceptance rates. It’s apples to oranges at a school like NYU, which fills more than half of its entering class from ED.
With your credentials, you are a very strong applicant for ED. They love to have very high test scores among those who commit to enroll via ED. Those same credentials might impair your application in RD, since admissions would likely view you as overqualified, conclude that NYU is not a top choice and that you will probably be admitted and enroll at another university.
NYU ED acceptance overall last year was about 30%. Some portion of those ED applicants would have not been qualified (applying to NYU as a dream school reach). Your strong credentials in ED will place you in a favorable position; however, no one can predict a yay or nay.
