NYU Stern ED2/Ivy League Schools

Hi everyone I am a four-star tennis recruit that got screwed over by covid in my recruiting process but I have recently applied to NYU Stern ED2 as a recruited tennis player because of my support from the coach and the prestigious opportunity. But I am having second thoughts because my initial plan was to eventually go to law school as a history major in undergrad at an ivy. I have lost my spot on Cornell, Darthmouth, and Penn’s tennis team and only have walk-on spots now which means I have to get in without coach support on my own.

Granted I have not heard back from NYU Stern ED2…I am thinking of pulling out of my ED2 (because I would still like to have a true college campus, I am a bit intimidated by the constraint of doing only business when I would like to pursue humanities and go to law school).

My parents are afraid of losing this opportunity and not being accepted to any top academic schools if I wait for all my regular decision schools and losing the opportunity to play tennis in college completely if I end up at big school like Michigan/UVA (tennis team is too good for me).

I was wondering how hard it is to eventually transfer out of STERN to UPenn for History (or Wharton if I like business) or Cornell, Columbia, and Dartmouth if I do not like it there. I will try to maintain a high GPA at STERN and I am even hoping to try to transfer into these schools as an athlete (which may be harder going from D3 to D1) possibly.

And any advice on pulling my NYU Stern ED2 to wait for my ivy decisions to come and hopefully get in and walk on like my initial hopes. Please let me know, thank you so much!

A few thoughts:

  1. See if you can change your NYU major. I have to think it would not be difficult to move out of Stern into a social science than vice versa. Why did you apply for business if that’s not your interest - just curious?

  2. Consider withdrawing from ED2 to regular decision. I say this if you have safeties - i.e. you don’t get into the Ivies. You are studying history with an eye on law school. Where you go is less relevant. Your grades and LSAT are most important - and now many top schools are seeking work experience.

So let’s say you have another D3 school where you can walk on - and I’m not talking Bowdoin, Bates - but even a couple notches down- a Macalester, Skidmore, Franklin & Marshall. NYU is what it is - no campus, etc.

  1. Alternatively - you claim you lost your spot at Ivy - but have you lost admission? If you’re good enough to play, you’ll find your way on eventually - maybe a practice player or otherwise. Or check for competitive leagues, etc.

Seems NYU is so wrong for you for so many reasons - majors, campus type/vibe, etc. I’m guessing the major can be easily change. I would call the office - you don’t need to give your name - and just ask. Or email your counselor and ask.

But they have no campus and the school is spread depending on majors - schools like NYU, GW, BU are not for everyone - and for those who don’t like the big city, it’s going to be a long year!! And you need to have a chance to be happy.

Good luck

Hi, thank you so much for your response!

I actually applied to STERN for business because that would be my second choice major after history and I had athletic support from the coach at a top school.

Also, I had offers from Bowdoin Bates and many D3 schools but I did not want to go to a liberal arts college. I also had 15 D1 offers from less strong academic schools but I was aiming for an ivy and play D1 tennis to start.

but why did you apply into your second choice and not your first?

I guess what I’m asking is - why didn’t you apply for your first choice major? Wouldn’t the coaches support be there regardless of major? In some ways, I wonder why you approached NYU at all if you want a campus. If NYU Tennis wants you, so would others.

I get you’re aiming for an Ivy- but if your goal is law - and goals do change - then where you go to school is less relevant than your GPA and LSAT. Check out Harvard Law or Yale Law - you’ll find the Ivies but you’ll also find App State, Boise State, North Dakota State in their student body.

If you are fixated on Ivy - and you know that’s an athletic league - then i have no idea why you applied ED2 to NYU. If it were me, i’d pull it to RD. But that’s me. I’d at least look into changing to the major I want.

Seems to me - an LAC is better for you than NYU - in what you describle.

Perhaps you’ll love to grow NYU. But it’s not a college campus in a city. It is the city - and that’s what would cause me hesitation based on your comments.

I think that the OP is a prestige hunter and Stern is higher prestige than CAS.

I chose NYU Stern because it is relatively more prestigious than other schools at NYU. Also, I believe I can go to a better academic school than studying humanities at NYU but I am not sure about admissions this year seems really tough.

My parents are*

You are going to school - not your parents - and you need to be happy - day after day after day for four years.

I hope you power through it - but your parents are starting you in a hole.

The college you go to, especially for history, won’t be what makes you a success in life.

You will be what makes you a success - whether you are at U Delaware or Dartmouth.

Good luck tho - but you need to push for YOU!!

btw - NYU is very good in the social sciences…i.e. history.

The strength of a department can be judged by its graduate program rankings. NYU is 16th in History.

Thank you so much for your support and advice! I will definitely take it into consideration.

Yes I know NYU is strong overall. I am still trying to navigate through exactly what I want. Academic wise and environment wise, I appreciate the input!
