nyu stern transfer - fall 2009

i was planning on transferring to stern for fall 2009 and i was wondering about a few things.

1) how difficult is it?
2) how much emphasis is placed on standardized test scores and high school?
3) what is the university looking for in an applicant?

i was a royal screw up in high school. i had a difficult time coping with a lot of personal problems so most of my time was spent trying to maintain composure and peace of mind. i really didn't focus much on my academics. my sats and gpa were mediocre and are not a true representation of what i am today.

i currently attend indiana university and have done respectably well. i have all A's in my business classes and B's in general education and electives.

my whole life up to this point i doubted my intelligence. i always thought i was an idiot. but what i found in college was a new level of confidence, passion and a strong work ethic. i realized that i'm a capable intelligent individual and i think i would be successful at nyu.

but how do i convey all this to the admissions board? i really want this more than ever and would like to maximize my chances of getting in.

incoming class sizes are growing and transfer spots are becoming more competitive. please any advice would be of assistance.

Stern is probably the most hardest school to get into tied with Tisch.

Not as much as college stuff but still counts. If you took the ACT or SAT in high school, you have to submit that score. If you never took it before, then you don't have to take it. I heard somewhere that if you have more than a year of college(30+ credits), you don't have to send in your test scores but I would make sure with that. And I do believe they will look past you screwing up especially if you're going to be a junior. It counts less the more years have past. I saw people with below 3.5s in high school getting accepted on here so don't give up. You can do it.

Like any college, NYU is looking for a student who has leadership skills and is qualified to make an effort. They want to know that instead of just doing a bunch of clubs, what you have done to help. For example, you're in a Concert club. It wouldn't help much to be a regular member setting up lights and equipment. However, being leader or someone who started that club would help greatly.

1) Difficult? If you mean academics, of course it is but some students can handle the pressure well. If you mean admissions, the acceptance rate is lower than other NYU schools but it is possible for you to be accepted. There are people I met at Stern that got in with less than stellar high school grades (below 90 HS average; lowest I heard was a 79). I only know transfers with this though. On the other hand, there are those with 4.0 GPAs rejected while those with way lower GPAs accepted. The admissions staff are unpredictable sometimes.
2) As a transfer, there will be less emphasis but will not be overlooked. That's what they say on the NYU admissions bulletin board. Just say if you took Biology for SAT II and got a bad score but then got a good grade for a similar class at your current university, it will definitely count well less.
3) Really look at the NYU admissions bulletin board and ask. They will definitely tell you.

hey guys, i'm a freshman at a public college in new york (Baruch College if anyone heard of it) and im hoping to transfer to stern 2009 as a sophomore ...

I checked the forums at NYU and i read somewhere saying that it's good to take financial and managerial acct, which isnt offered to us freshmen until our sophomore year. but i'm taking calculus, microecon, writing and other classes (16 credits semester), would that suffice?

Is it harder to get into NYU if i come from a public college in NY?

If I don't apply for financial aid, would that increase my chances of getting in?

and last question (pretty dumb question) ... is there a transfers early decision lol .

When does the transfer application open ? I'm looking at the application right now ... but it doesnt seem to say that it has a transfer application for fall 2009 transfers, only for 2008 fall transfers (which already passed?).

and the questions are the same as last years ... o_o

forget the first post ... but when does transfer applications open for NYU ? I see the same exact essay question as when I applied last year ...

also, does stern accept on a rolling admissions basis ?

bump ~~~~~ 10 char

I'm applying to NYU Stern as a junior for fall 09 from Syracuse University:
-current GPA: 3.6 but I expect to bring to AT LEAST 3.7 (bombed 1 writing class in HS, which I plan to retake here in spring 09, but unfortunately they won't see that semesters GPA...)
-Various Extracurriculars:
-VP of Hindu Club
-Honors Society
-Investment Club
- Entrepreneurship Club
- Red Cross
-The problem is I bombed my SAT's in HS, I got a 1650 & I never took SAT II's
-I've heard they barely look at SAT's if you have above freshman status in college(30 credits+), but otherwise do I have a chance?

Why not retake the sats?
