HI!
So it’s getting close to that November 1st date and I’m really stuck between these two schools for ED. Both schools I will play golf in for sure, coaches gave me a spot. Here are some Pro’s and Con’s I gathered up. Could you guys help me analyze them? I am interested in business but am not 100% sure I want to pursue it, more like 70% sure.
NYU Stern:
Pro’s:
-in the city, so wide range of internship opportunities
-better networking for business among peers
-everyone around is motivated, driven to pursue business
Con’s:
-golf team is much better than Wellesley so school work of Stern plus traveling for golf stuff = super hard, one of my friends who did that dropped off the golf team bc couldn’t handle Stern’s workload added with athletics
-one-way track of business, switching out is not really an option as if I majored in something else I would rather go to Wellesley for it (b/c of cost I think only Stern is worth it)
Wellesley:
Pro’s:
-a lot easier to balance school work and golf
-near Boston but not too much city life
-can take classes at MIT
-can explore different career paths more easily
Con’s:
-if I end up doing business, Stern just might be the better school (networking + business fraternities)
-alumni network is really good but peer networking is not as good if I end up doing business because surrounded by all kinds of majors not just finance, stat, econ, etc.
Thank you so much!! <3
PS did an overnight at Wellesley, really liked it- I have yet to do one at Stern (scheduled sometime in the next few weeks)
Speaking as a Wellesley alum, I think you’ve done a really good job of summing up the pros and cons of each school. At this point, I truly believe your best choice is to do that overnight visit at Stern and trust your gut. Where do you feel more at home? Where do you think your personality is a better fit? The schools are so different that it’s going to come down to which environment suits you best.
One quick thing to note about Wellesley, however: In addition to cross-registration with MIT, they also offer cross-registration with Babson, which is one of the best business schools in the country and is only about a mile away from campus. You should definitely look into that option as well.
Forgive me, but it’s a pet peeve of mine when people push the proximity of Boston and cross-registration options as a way to study other majors or meet guys. Let’s be real, Wellesley is an all women’s liberal arts college in a suburban town in Massachusetts. And that can be awesome, IF that’s what you want. But if you want to be in a city, keep in mind that Boston is about 40 minutes from Wellesley. If you want to go to study engineering or business, you can take classes at MIT or Babson, you can take shuttle buses, but it’s not that easy. As for socializing, this weekend Wellesley cancelled the one big party that draws guys to our campus. There are some wonderful things about Wellesley, but if you are thinking you might want to study business in a city, I am not convinced that this is the best school for you. I do not know anyone on the Wellesley golf team, but I know many other student athletes who find it challenging to balance sports and academics here.
Yes, true that cross registration isn’t a perfect solution. Playing golf in Manhattan is a challenge too.
@justdoesntmatter was the party cancelled due to the inaugural festivities for the new president?
@Oregon2016
Very good point about the difficulty of playing golf in Manhattan. I think the Wellesley course is about a mile away.
Remix was supposed to be held outside and was cancelled due to a cold/rainy forecast and a lack of alternate indoor space (due to inauguration events). The student group in charge of planning the event tried to placate everyone by sending pizzas to the dorms and offering a $150 tab at the pub. The weather and lack of space was totally out of their control, but pizzas and $150 for a “LIT” night at the pub? Sigh.
But hey, we didn’t come here to party.
Hi, I applied to Wellesley for EDI and I will also play golf if I’m accepted. Where did you apply for ED at the end?
