NYU Stern vs. Mendoza vs. USC Marshall

I got accepted into those three business schools. In your impartial opinion, which of these would you choose? I’m personally leaning towards Mendoza as of now. But, I hear that going to Stern will give you essentially an extremely high probability of getting a job on Wall Street after graduation.

The reason I am not that fascinated with Stern is because of its lack of a campus and I do not like the weather there (I live in NJ).

Its basically my heart telling me ND, but brain telling me Stern.

pls give me your opinions and thoughts!!

What is your goal going to college?

Congrats, you have a lot of great choices. IMO if your heart is telling you ND, then go there. If you want a more traditional undergraduate experience ,ND is a great choice. Don’t discount gut feeling as part of the process. (FYI, my S took NYU off his list after looking at it because it didn’t offer the type of experience he wanted as an undergrad.)

All of them will prepare you well for business.

You left out the most important information: what will be the cost of attendance (tuition/fees/room/board minus grants/scholarships, not including loans)… how much loans would you need to attend each.

@kcezca99 Goal is mainly getting a good job after graduation while having a fun time in college

@harvardandberkeley As of now, it is full tuition for both schools (65k around for each), because I have not received my financial aid package yet. But, without considering tuition, which school do you think will help me the most after graduation?

@happy1 I feel like going to Stern, although I am not fond of the no campus and environment, it will be the most beneficial to my future and career, not just in NYC. Which school do you believe getting a degree from is most recognized nationally? I hear a USC Marshall degree is just useful for Cali.

IMO they are both very highly ranked, well respected business schools. ND has a big alumni base in NYC. Nobody can make the decision for you, but IMO you want to enjoy all aspects of your college life – you only have one chance to be an undergrad so do it in the environment that suits you best.

@happy1 I’ll prob end up visiting both schools. And how about USC Marshall? Is it not even comparable to Stern/Mendoza? I hear its Alumni network is very strong as well however

I just don’t know much about CA schools. I have heard (from a friend whose son is there) that USC is in a terrible area though. If you can visit your top choices that will help you make a decision.

Anyone else have other thoughts and insight?

“The reason I am not that fascinated with Stern is because of its lack of a campus and I do not like the weather there (I live in NJ).”

Do you have any idea what the weather is like in South Bend?

@rjkofnovi Then factor out weather from ND vs. Stern. But, ND has a great traditional which is what I love. I’m in such a dilemma but am forever grateful

Stern and ND are both great schools. I’m Stern student, but i’ll give you the most unbiased answer i possibly can

More recognized nationally & internationally: Stern without a question

Recruiting: Stern but to be honest ND does extremely well too especially in recent years; you’ll get the job opportunities you’re looking for at either but at Stern you can explore a little more through internships in earlier years if that is something that interest you

I’d really give Stern a shot - you get an amazing set of study abroad opportunities (ISP, IBEX, Semester Away, Short-Term Immersions) and it is really an unreal school.

If you’re worried about community building at NYU - that won’t be a problem. Where does community building happen? This happens in dorms and Stern or NYU clubs/organizations. Now if you like the idea of going out and tossing a football around outside - that definitely does not happen at NYU unlesss you head out to a park with your friends.

If you really want to go to ND - you should go. You won’t really lose anything but you just won’t have the city for additional networking / internship purposes - What I mean by this is that at schools like ND, students almost exclusively depend on Career Services to get them jobs but it is not uncommon at NYU for students to reach out to companies directly and get jobs (students have gained jobs at prestigious hedge funds this way by reaching out and sharing investment pitches) - this kind of thing is probably extremely rare at schools like ND.

If you can afford to study in Stern and live in NYC, go there.

@qwertyzxc Do you believe its Stern > Mendoza even if I want to go into consulting and not finance? I’m not a person who absolutely wants/needs to work on Wall Street. Also, is it true that at Stern, there is a huge fiery competitive nature among the students?

Here is the difference between Notre Dame and NYU, kids that go to Notre Dame really, really, really want to be there. Kids that go to NYU really wanted to get into Columbia.

Both Bloomberg and Fortune rank Mendoza much higher than Stern. #1 and tied for #2. Stern is not even in the top ten.

The average Notre Dame student is a much better student than the average NYU student based on test scores.

I also don’t think NYU can compare in terms of a whole college experience. Few schools can compare to Notre Dame in that regard. The alumni network at Notre Dame is one of the best.

@TimeToBreath what about ND Econ vs Stern or even USC Marshall. My friend is not pre-approved to Mendoza (there is a new policy this year that makes only people who apply to Mendoza directly during their application process are allowed to enter Mendoza, with there being an unlikely chance of being able to internal transfer to Mendoza for other students). He would thus be forced to major in something else (ie. Econ) if is unsuccessful in his slim chance of internal transferring to Mendoza.

Essentially, he wants to really go to ND but would being an Econ major and not having the “Mendoza” name make him be at a vast disadvantage in employability than “Mendoza” students or Stern/Marshall?

If you can afford it, study at Stern. Any smart businessman would suggest you got to Stern lol. If you come out with decent grades, you’re pratically handed jobs on Wall Street and the other thousands of business located in NYC. Plus you get to live in NYC :slight_smile:

@JHuff11‌, if your friend really wants a b-school education, he should take the sure b-school admit.

If he wants “a job”, that’s different. You can get a job from anywhere, but not all jobs are the same. Does your friend have any goals or preferences besides “get a job”?

@0br0123‌

The smart business people you refer to rank ND substantially higher. Mendoza has been #1 for 5 years in a row while Stern drops. NYU has great graduate programs but for undergraduates cannot compare to ND in any poll or metric.

@JHuff11‌

I would pick ND regardless of major for a whole bunch of reasons.
