NYU Stern Vs. Northwestern Econ

According to http://www.tiderinsider.com/forum/classics/020623-1.html, Northwestern was 3rd in terms of number alumni who are CEO's of Forbes 500 companies, behind only Harvard and Stanford (not NYU).

There's no program through which you can "come up knowing everything to execute your own ideas and work for yourself and no one else". You overestimate what a particular major/school can do to your worldly success. Advanced communication skills, independence of mind, ability to work with and team with others, willingness for lifelong training and learning are probably more important than any finance curriculum for one's worldly success.

I am not saying that NYU is better than Northwestern, I am saying that when you check out the lists of top schools in each field, I see several other schools that appear on the top a lot more often then northwestern does and they are placed a lot higher on the list of overall best schools. I disagree with the overall list. Northwestern is good in only a few areas. They might be better than NYU, but they are still only good in a few areas. Check out the ranking by US news.

numberone,

I don't know what you meant by "few". US News, after all, doesn't rank that many disciplines. As far as I remember, there are only few schools that have "many" top-10 departments--Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley, and Michigan. Columbia/Yale/Princeton/Chicago probaly have quite a few esp in the liberal arts but overall, I don't think they have "many more" than Northwestern. If I am not mistaken, Duke/Penn are pretty close to Northwestern. WashU and Dartmouth have fewer.

Regarding Northwestern, US News 2006 graduate ranking placed Northwestern in the top 10 in the following areas:
school of business, school of law, school of education, econ, material science, industrial engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering.

Northwestern also have departments that many consider top-10 but they are not surveyed by US News: art history, school of journalism, all of the five departments in school of communication, school of music (non-conservatory). So there are 16 departments/schools already, more than "only a few" in my book.

Other honorable mention on US News (top-20): applied math, chemistry, english, history, sociology, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, environmental engineering.

By the way, NU have two of the best research centers in nanotechnology and materials research.
