Hi,
I'm a transfer student that was accepted to both WashU and NYU.
I'm seriously in a dilemma because I don't which school to pick.
@ WashU, I plan to major in econ/finance, while @ NYU, I plan to do finance. Academic-wise, which seems to be better? I understand both schools are completely different (campus-wise). I've visited both and I love both of them. I'm from Hong Kong myself, so I enjoy the city life, but I also like the chill/gorgeous campus of WashU. In terms of financial aid, I didn't get any, so difference in cost would be irrelevant (assume difference in cost of living is negligible too). Also, how do the job/intern placements compare? I guess my point how would a econ/fin @ washu compare to a fin @ nyu? in terms of academics? job/intern placements? prestige (yeah, this is still a pretty big deal in Asia)?

Regarding name recognition, I would go with NYU. NYU Stern is viewed as one of the leading business schools in the U.S. Although, in general (for undergraduate), WashU is academically better, I would give NYU the edge in business.

Thank you very much so far for the replies. I'm still trying to weigh the pros and cons of the two.

@ WashU, would double majoring give me any edge at all? Also, I just realized that I applied for Econ @ NYU stern. If I was accepted, am I binded to that major or am I allowed to switch to Finance? Thanks!!

zyclone, as I said to you earlier, go with NYU. You are from Hong Kong and name recognition is important for the international student. I would be surprised if WashU is more known in Hong Kong than NYU, which has a stronger business and economics program. I would also be surprised if they do not not allow you to switch to your desired major. Call the people at Stern and speak directly to them about the possibility of switching.

zyclone: You applied to Stern Econ? You can DEFINENTLY change your anticipated discipline. When you meet with your advisor, you let him/her know.

you don't even have to let your advisor know, they don't even record the major you apply with. (if you picked an uncommon major, the head of the department may email you, but thats about it)
