NYU (sticker) vs. Rutgers (in state)

Help!

My little brother was recently accepted to NYU. However, here's the catch:

He was rejected from Stern (his first choice), but was allowed admission into NYU CAS.

He was offered a small scholarship ($2,000/year).

Apparently, he advised me that taking living expenses into account, NYU will be in the ball park of $45,000 to $50,000/year!!

His only other option (right now) is Rutgers. He got a decent scholarship from Rutgers and is also paying in-state. Taking all that into consideration, he is paying about $10,000/k a year at Rutgers. One year at NYU tuition = BA from Rutgers!!!!

If this were Stern, I would definitely recommend he go to Stern. However, given the economic uncertainty, and the fact that he was indeed rejected from Stern, I actually recommend that he just "suck it up" and go to Rutgers.

Knowing that CC people are generally elitists and brand name prestige wh0res, I'm reluctant to post on this message board b/c everybody will say "NYU is a much better NAME SCHOOL than Rutgers!" But is NYU's brand name significantly better than Rutgers' to justify the $35,000/k year price tag difference? Also, in this economic turmoil, I'm not so sure if NYU grads will really have a significant competitive advantage over Rutgers grads. Anecdotally, I know quite a few NYU grads working in underemployed jobs like coffee shops, administrative assistants, etc. To be fair though, conversely, I know many NYU grads who are big shot Wall Street bankers or lawyers making mid six figures in their mid to late 20s.

Also, keep in mind that if he goes to NYU, he'll have to compete with Stern kids for all the good jobs on Wall Street (whatever is left). And Stern kids generally are given preference over the rest of NYU people for all the good jobs.

My brother is a bit of an egotistical brat. He loves the lure of NYC and the fact that NYU is a respectable "brand name" school. But Rutgers I think is pretty good in its own right. Yes, it may not have the best brand name reputation, but it'll offer my brother a good education at a very reasonable price.

Superficially, my hunch is that my brother is leaning towards NYU because of the city and the supposd prestige/brand name. I'm actually leaning towards Rutgers b/c it's more practical. My brother has no idea what he wants to major in. He's thinking business or liberal arts.

You would be correct in leaning towards Rutgers. I’ve done some looking into both schools and the quality is basically the same. There’s certainly not enough difference between the academic quality to warrant the extra tuition. However, it is your brother’s choice and you should let him make it your family has enough money to send him there. I suggest making sure he gets a job once there and that every dime of it goes to his tuition if he does decide to choose NYU.

As a Rutgers College (as it was in the older days) I can assure you that Rutgers does have a quality reputation–outside of NJ. NYU may be located in NYC and have a reputation in the city, but there is a tradeoff. Having done some recruitment there, it has “real” campus, lacks the traditional college feel (football weekends, sports, etc.) and IMO, is way overpriced for what you get (if you don’t count living in NYC for 4 years). Here in Wash DC, Rutgers has a valued reputation and I’m still surprised by some knotheads who think its part of the Ivy League. Anyhow, my two roommates from college majored in business and econ–one went on to Wharton and the other Harvard Business. I’m now a senior US Gov officer who has quite a number of Harvard, UVA, and other top college grads working for me right now. Save your money for a good grad/prof school, thats my opinion.

OP, where do you go to school? Could your parents easily afford the sticker price?

I personally do not understand NYU or why it’s such a hot school. I understand why most in state students do not want to go to Rutgers. We couldn’t convince our D1 to go after she got into their Honors program, scholarship money…

From a parent’s point of view, if I have paid for my older kid to go to a private school then I would feel obligated to do so for my other kid, that’s why I asked where you are going to school. NYU is higher ranked, and your brother will have a better opportunity to get a job in finance coming out of NYU than Rutgers. He could also get good summer jobs or part time work while he is at NYU.

My D1 had a similar situation where she was offered a full ride to a good LAC and a full sticker price top tier school. We have always planned on paying 50,000, but if we didn’t have to…We made a deal with her, 1)if she took the full ride, we would pay for her graduate school, 2) if she went to the full fare school, she would be on the hook for 10,000. She chose the top tier school.

It depends. Which Rutgers was he accepted into?

Rutgers. There isn’t a noticeably large disparity in the quality of the education to justify that much more money.

If he is thinking of going into business, then he should think like a businessman. Do more research before making a decision.

It’s his decision, not yours. It’s also not the decision of anyone on CC. Rutgers will be MUCH cheaper. If, however, he/your parents can afford either, and he prefers a city environment, then maybe he should choose NYU.

I’m in the same exact situation regarding the two college choices

NYU is offering me 30k without the loans and Rutgers is offering me 19k without loans

I want to major in Engineering which makes Rutgers the ideal choice, but I really don’t want to go as NYU seems to offer a more challenging curriculum

NYU is not worth the difference in cost. Save your money for grad school or for a junior year abroad or for a new car the day you graduate from college or for whatever else you’d like to have money for.

right , i recommend rutgers as well cuz the extremely high expense of attending NYU CAS but not stern.if he gonna major in biz then go NYU definitely, but now the major is law, which weakens the advantage of NYU.Then regarding the tuition, NYU has zero possibility to win.

No way it’s worth it to spend that much money for NYU.

NYU is definitely not worth the full price–Rutgers is an excellent school. But is this your business?

He is just trying to guide his brother. Perhaps they are very close and his brother trusts his decisions.

How much of this would be paid out of pocket, and how much would be paid in loans? If your brother is looking at a large college debt, help him run the loan payback calculators at [FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org) and [College Calculators - savings calculators - college costs, loans](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>How Much Will College Cost – BigFuture | College Board) . He might also read some of the personal stories at [Project on Student Debt: Home](http://projectonstudentdebt.org/) but then again, some of those are so scary that maybe it isn’t such a hot idea.

If this was Stern it would be a tougher decision but NYU CAS is probably not worth the 45K if he can go to Rutgers for much less.

Btw, I never knew that someone could be placed in CAS if they applied for Stern(I asked this and they said it was not possible).
