Hello! I am an incoming freshman at NYU and I was looking to switch to Studio Art as my major. I am already in Steinhardt so I am not worried about switching, however, I was looking to get some information on the art program itself. I have tried to find some information online but my searches have proved useless. I am just trying to decide if it is worth the money ($71,000 a year :-S) to study art at NYU or if I should look elsewhere.
Hi! My daughter is a rising senior in the studio art program at NYU with a sculpture concentration.
First, you should know that you can’t just switch into the program because you are accepted into Steinhardt. The program is a selective program and students need to be accepted based on a portfolio review. The portfolio is considered for 50% of your acceptance.
Students outside of the major may take studio art classes, but they are different classes than majors. BFA majors are required to take certain required classes their freshman year. So it is possible that you would not be able to transfer in before sophomore year.
The art departments web site is fairly comprehensive, so you should be able to see what courses are required for the degree and you can go on Albert for up to date course descriptions.
You should speak to the undergraduate advisor asap to see if anything could be done for this year if your portfolio is ready.
D loves the program. Keep in mind that it is a contemporary/ conceptually based program. The faculty is made up of working contemporary artists. The program also has high academic expectations.
It is hard to say whether any degree is worth the money. How do you measure that? However, that said, we are able to pay for college in full and are leaving D debt free. I would not want a student --especially in the arts–leaving college with a lot of debt.
Good luck to you! If you have anymore specific questions, ask away!
