I was about to submit my common app w/ supplements to NYU a few minutes ago and on the forums I read about how Gallatin applicants can go over 500 characters. The NYU office is closed for the break and the online common app website just cuts off my supplement at exactly 500. Anyone have any advice?

I converted the nyu pdf to a .doc and pasted my response on that, but then it means I have to go all paper or do they automatically connect my online common app account with the paper version I'm sending in?

My advice would be to cut your essay down to 500 characters unless you can get someone from the admissions office on the phone tomorrow to okay this.

I’m a current student in Gallatin and when I applied, none of my essays went over the limit.

Those three questions have to be 500 characters or under. However, Gallatin has another essay that you can submit separately. Here’s the link that tells you about it

There’s no limit on how long that can be and if I were you I would really use this essay to your advantage since the other ones are so short. Gallatin puts a huge emphasis on the essays.

What I meant is no limiting character limit. Mine was about a page and half double spaced. Don’t send them a 10 page essay, but its definitely a lot easier to express why you chose Gallatin than in the 500 characters…

oooo, thanks for all the replies,
The apps going to be due in a few days so I guess I’m going to have to pull an all-nighter trying to get it finished,

The common app online won’t let me attach any documents so I’m assuming I mail it?

My son spoke to an admissions officer and he e-mailed it to her and she put it in his folder. If the school is closed, send it in the mail and then follow-up with a phone call afterwards to see if they want it via computer. The school is very large and it takes forever for them to file something when you mail it. You want to make sure its in your folder before they review it.

From what I understand, the Gallatin longer essay is not supposed to be a part of the commonapp essay but a supplemental document. The way that I send in my supplemental documents, as recommended to me by the admissions officer, is I put them up on a blog and included the web address in the “additional info” area. He told me he got really irritated with email attachments and snail mail packets.

I contacted an admissions officer a few days ago and she got back to me today! yays!
This is what she wrote “Thanks for your email. You are correct that we do accept responses that are over the character limit when responding to why you would like to attend Gallatin. You can attach these responses in the additional information section of the application. Thanks for checking in, we look forward to reading your application!”

In the additional information part that’s in my writing portion of my app, isn’t it universal? meaning wouldn’t all the universities that I’m applying to read it?
Thanks,

^You need to make a separate, second version of the Common App just for NYU. The instructions for doing this are on the Common App website. You can put your Gallatin essay in the additional information section as well as other material, such as your CV. But it needs to be a separate just-for-NYU version of the Common App.
