I recently got into NYU Tandon for CS. I also got into Stony Brook a while back for CS. I’m currently stuck between which one I should take. Which one is better for me, and why?
Well, to determine which one is better for you, we’d need to know a bit more about you!
What are your stats? What do you want in a college? Where do you live?
How much can your parents afford from income and savings?
If you calculate (tuition, fees, room, board) - ( grants, scholarships ) =
What’s the result for each?
Unless you got a great deal of aid from NYU, Stony Brook. One factor not often considered about schools in NYC is the cost of living “off campus”. Forget what it costs freshman year for a dorm. If you live off campus, costs a fortune
to live anywhere near the campus. Food costs more. Movie theaters cost more. Unless you got mega aid
I would go to Stony Brook. SB is known for excellence in STEM including CS. NYU is a competitive school
for admissions, but not any better, maybe even not as good, for CS.
The main downside to SB is the location in the burbs, kinda boring place.
But much cheaper to live, cheaper tuition, great academically, possibly better for this major.
My son also got into Stony Brook (honor program) and NYU Tandon for CS major. SB provides full scholarship for tuition and fees, and NYU gives only about $19.7K out of total $49K tuition - still affordable though. We live in NYC so SB is a bit far away while NYU is about 50 minutes’ away by subway. He is also debating which one to pick. Any more suggestions?
@TryAllBest Tuition is free for CUNY and SUNY schools as long as your family makes less than 125k a year so I would recommend stony.
thanks for the reply. How about the education quality and future career development? NYU seems having bigger and more powerful alumni network. I also noticed some negative comments about NYU Tandon (high drop-out rate = bad teaching experience?). Not sure about SB as less info there (the web site info looks out-dated as well). State university vs. private one, do you think there is any recruiting difference?
@TryAllBest NYU Tandon is a relatively new school so it’s hard to say if it has a good cirrcculum but from what I’ve heard, when it comes to education in engineering, they seem to be in par with Stony Brook. The only thing is that NYU has a huge brand so it’ll be great to have it on your resume, but Stony Brook is really only recognized in New York.
