Hi, I'm applying for NYU Tisch this year. I decided that because the only way I would go is if I got into the Playwright's Horizons program, I'm going to do the Directing application. (Which, if admitted, you are automatically placed into that studio) Because of this, my drama teacher at my school is allowing me to direct a short this November that I wrote, as well as a full length play this January to include in a portfolio. (I'm doing Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl) As the rehearsal process begins for the first piece, what should I be looking for to include in the portfolio? I directed an adaptation of the last scene of the Caucasian Chalk Circle by Brecht this past June, but other than that, I have no other experience. How should I go about rehearsals and what should I make note of if I want to make my portfolio the best? Anybody with any experience on the subject please reply!

My D also considered directing and applied to most schools as a Theater Arts or Production/Directing major. She too directed a major production in high school.

For her portfolio, she included two production concepts. One was the play she had directed; the other was a series of ideas for a play she liked but had not directed (nor had she seen a production). For each, she showed photo research to describe the look and feel. These included fashion and architecture photos from the periods in which she had set the plays. She also showed sketches and fabric swatches for costumes and sketches and plans for the set. Finally, she had photos and a marked-up script from the play she actually directed.

Hopefully, these sketches and photos will embody your vision but you will also need to defend it. The interviewers will want to know if you can think and talk about the theater. Plan your presentation as well as your portfolio.
