NYU DIRECTING Audition Experience

Hello!

I had my audition for the directing program at Tisch (housed inside the Playwrights' Horizons studio) this morning, and thought I'd share a little about my experience, since I had very little information going in about what it would be like.

The audition began at 9am. Besides me, there were only three other directing applicants. Now, this may not be the norm, but I get the impression that the directing program has a far lower applicant rate than other programs, which makes it feel a little less competitive.

After a faculty member talked to the group about the structure of the program, we were called in one by one for our individual auditions.

For my individual experience, I had about 25 minutes with the auditor. It was a very relaxed environment. After doing my monologue, I sat down and we went through my portfolio.

For my portfolio, I had three sections. Two were shows that I had already directed, and the last one included some rough outlines of ideas for other productions. In the sections for the shows I had directed, I included samples of marked-up scripts with cue sheets, programs, posters, photos from the show, set designs, costume notes, and any other written material for the show (press releases, articles, budgets, proposals, etc.).

While we certainly spent a fair amount of time reviewing the portfolio, a lot of the discussion was initiated by her asking me questions. More or less they were all related to what I had done. I was asked questions like, "Why did you want to tell the story of [insert show]?," or "What makes you want to do theatre?" I was also asked about what non-arts interests I had, and why I enjoyed them.

Overall, it was a very laid-back and comfortable experience. If you have any questions, please email me or PM me.
