NYU/Tisch Drama

Question for NYU folks:

If one is placed in one of the studios, is it possible to take electives in film and/or participate in student films? I know students are in studio three days each week, what happens on the other two days of the week? What requirements are there outside of studio time? Gen Ed requirement in CAS?

Thanks.

All NYU students have the ability, unless something has changed, to take the Open Arts courses that are offered by Tisch. These courses are specifically for non-majors. My D participated in several student films when she was at Tisch, although didn’t take any film classes. On the two non-studio days, Tischies take their academic courses. I won’t comment on what the current requirements are, in case they’ve changed since my D graduated, but, yes, there are classes on the two non-studio days, and if the student is double majoring, as my D did, those days are busy.

Freshman year in a studio, you’re schedule won’t be able to accommodate an elective. You can have up to 18 credits a semester. Studio is 8, the required Writing the Essay class is 4, and Intro to Theatre Studies and/or Intro to Theatre Production is 4. You could take a 2 point elective if you wanted to.

After freshmen year, you can use you’re other 10 credits in any way you want. However, I don’t think that film classes count towards your arts/science GenEd requirements.

You can participate in student films whenever you want.
