NYU Tisch Studio Assignments?

Anyone hear anything yet for regular decision?

I was reg decision, auditioned in LA and I am a cap 21 er and receieved a 20000 dollar scholarship

I got into CAP21 as well!

Yippee! Let us know if you decide to go! My daughter is going to go. Might you attend the Tisch events this coming Saturday?

Happy for you, Collegebound87....you really ARE college bound!
Susan

I was invited to Saturday in the Sqaure, but due to my incredibly busy life (like most of us) I am unable to make it to NY this weekend (I live in CA, so it's quite a treck). But I'd love to hear how it goes!

Dear vi1 Don't be dissapointed. I know how hard it is to want Cap and not get it. My son is graduating this May from Playwrights and he would not have wanted to go to anywhere. else. Playwrights will let you do Musical Theater in your Sophmoore year. Freshman year is a time to learn everything... including directing, acting, tech, dance, voice, and so on. Of all the studios Playwrights kids come out the best abkle to cope with the " real world" because they have been exposed and and trained in it all. The Main stage Tisch productions( I think there are 6) are open to all Tisch students. There are usually two musicals and the rest staright plays. Threre are also student run productions called Gap shows that are student run and are often Musicals. Playwrights also is the Directing school so it's Directing majors use all their playwrights actors in their shows which again may be musical or not. My son managed to land leads in a number of Gap shows over Cap kids. He also scored the lead in the musical Drama main stage this Fall. Now he graduates in May having finished in 3 years. Remenber if you choose Playwrights, it is up to you to create you successes! Your Studio is only the place where you train. The contacts you make at school are what is goiung to get you jobs out in the real world. PS. My son is a director and all of the actresses from all of the studios are trying to make contact with him, for t future work! Good luck on your choice of schools! I am sure you will find the school with the right fit for you!

Camge,

I would love to contact you. I have many questions about Playwrights. My D was also hoping to get Cap 21, but received a Playwrights placement. Her background is almost exclusively MT. Years of voice, legit soprano, years of classical ballet. Right now, she has mixed feelings about that. On the plus side, we've heard nothing but raves about Playwrights. However, she is seriously considering other MT program offers and we need to get as much info as possible in the next few weeks. May 1 is fast approaching.

We will be at Tisch this Saturday for the "Saturday at the Square Event" hoping to get as much info as possible. I've already chatted with a Tisch administrator (who graduated CAP in '02) who told me that in his opinion, Playwrights has the BEST faculty. What is your experience?

Please send me a PM or email. I'd like to get more specifics.

Thanks in advance!

I was placed into Stella Adler. Does anyone know if it's possible to take voice lessons and dance classes through the university if you're not in CAP 21?

Yes it is possible. You will have 16 credits worth of required courses, leaving you with 2 more possible hours to play with. My son registered for private voice through Tisch, was on a lengthy wait list and didn't expect to get in, but did. Took a 2 credit elective private voice both semesters freshman year. It's also possible to take dance classes, but you have to pay extra if you excceed 18 credit hours. My son has opted to pay for dance lessons (open classes) at Broadway Dance instead. These are cheaper than paying extra to NYU.

Jasmom, does your son like NYU and the program he's in? Does he have ANY free time with his 18-credit schedule AND dance classes? I'm just curious to get input from anyone I can because I have to make a big decision really soon, you know?

He LOVES it ! Says he works more than most of his friends in other majors, but seems to be very satisfied wth the results. He mentioned that he doesn't know why private voice is discouraged for freshmen. It's not much of a time drain. The dance classes he takes are open classes, so he decides based upon workload whether he can fit in the class. He does certainly have time to hang out and go to shows. He did not get a job or do any work study. For him, in Playwrights, especially the first year, it would have been too much.

jasmom :

I attended NYU's Saturday at the Square today with my D, who is accepted into Playwrights. She was told that freshmen could only take a private voice elective in 2nd semester. You mentioned that your son was able to take it both semesters. Is this a common occurrence?

What about the classes he takes that are not with his studio? Studio's Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, right? Are those all certain courses because of the MAP?

freelance,
Perhaps ignorance is bliss. He signed up on line for private voice and it was eventually approved. He knows other freshmen who did the same thing. Perhaps he was just assigned a lower priority on the sign-up list. I know that another (maybe more usual) option is the Tisch Chorale/Chorus. However, if you're interested in private voice, just give it a try. For next year he'll be taking voice performance (or something like that) for a 2 credit elective that involves two class sessions per week, the first with the voice instructor, the second with the choreographer . This is also a Tisch course.

Actor465,
He has studio M,TH,F. On M & W he takes Writing the Essay (both semesters) and one semester of Theater Studies and one of Theater Production. I don't think it has anything to do with MAP, at least not the first year. For next year he is satisfying one of his Humanities requirements as well as another Theater Studies requirement.

Jasmom, Camge & Others,

My D was hoping for CAP 21 and was offered Playwrights. Do you believe that this studio will give her the proper MT training? Her background is 90% MT. She's studied voice and dance for many years. It is simply not an option for her to gamble on "maybe" getting a private voice or dance elective. She has other offers (top MT programs) on the table and would love to hear more about PH options for MT.
Your children have had such positive experiences with PH--I'm eager to hear more details. Thanks!

Freelance, congrats to your D on getting into Tisch. From our experience, it is fairly common for kids who do not get into CAP21 to be placed in PH. My suggestion is to compare the curriculum at each and see how they differ, then compare PH's to that of the other programs which have made an offer of acceptance to your D. That way you'll have some idea if she feels as though she would be missing out on any particular area.

CAP21
<a href="http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/DR_CAP21_2.html%5B/url%5D">http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/DR_CAP21_2.html</a></p>

PH
<a href="http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/DR_PlayHorizons_2.html%5B/url%5D">http://drama.tisch.nyu.edu/object/DR_PlayHorizons_2.html</a></p>

Keep in mind that these lists are only the studio classes. The classes they take on the other two days of the week would be the same.

PH is a great studio, especially for kids who have not had the opportunity to study/experience other aspects of theatre. Kids who have gone to an arts h/s might find these things unnecessary but for kids who haven't, there's a wealth of knowledge to be gained. Good luck to her in her decision-making! :)

I agree with alwaysmom. My son has appreciated the additional perspective and more intensive training in acting/directing/design, and I'm sure it will serve him well. He also seems quite content with the extra dance classes from BDC (the instructors are amazing and he's in jazz class with Tisch dance majors) and he has 10+ years dance experience. However...I'm certain the private voice (at 30 minutes per week) is not as intensive as would be his voice experience in CAP. And, i'm imagining--although have haven't researched it--that there are other MT-specific experiences that CAP (or another straight MT programs would provide). I'm glad your daughter has some strong options to choose from. Playwrights is a lot of work. If the areas of study don't match well with your daughter's interests, or if she already has strong competencies in the courses taught, it may not be a great fit.
I don't recall where else your daughter is considering. I do know that NYU fits my son to a T (or vice versa). Finding that match seems key. Good luck to you. It's such a happy but weighty decision.

Dear Freelance, I'd be happy to answer any questions and can ask my S. If I don't have the answers. you can reach me by e-mail at camge@aol.com. Hope to hear from you soon. Cam

Freelance,
I've been out of town for a family wedding - so I am a little behind in reading many posts. Regarding Tisch and private voice - the reason you may have heard 2nd semester is because that is when the CAP kids start taking privates. It does not kick into their curriculum until then.
I know you are trying to find out how much training your daughter will get for musical theatre? If you are really talking about a balance of classes between the 3 areas of mt, then I believe some of her other schools offer this type of package. However, If she really is looking for an acting heavy program, with a lot of options for later years,(i.e. existing and new studio options) then Tisch is perfect. Even CAP is acting based. The musical components are not as emphasized as they are in places like UM, Syracuse, Steinhardt, etc..
I've heard it over and over from administrators that Tisch/Drama (which includes CAP) mission is not to train triple threats. It is to develop each individuals artistic and creative abilities. That is why Tisch is composed of so many studio's with different focus. They really want to nurture several hundred "individuals". It is a different philosophy from many schools. Not right for everyone, but absolutely perfect for my d1 - and obviously for jasmom, camge and alwaysamom!
You are doing all the right things by talking to students from Tisch and PH.
Alwaysamom gave great advice to check out the curriculum and compare.
Your daughter has some great choices!!! I know sometimes that can make the decision even harder!
Best of luck to you and your d and if you have any other questions just write or pm me.

Can I just ask a question and be brutally honest without trying to be rude AT ALL. OK, I just know that NYU seems to get a wrap of not giving as strong of training to kids as they should. For any students or people with students in the program can u dispute this? I ma just tyring to make a decision between schools and I keep on telling myself that the training at NYU CAP21 is just not that great but i am not sure why i completely think this...let me know your comments...ps this is directed towards cap, i hear the other studios are great!
