NYU Tisch Studio Assignments?

He, everyone. I recently got accepted into NYU’s Tisch school, but I’m still awaiting my studio assignment (apparently they’re not mailing them out until the end of this week…) Is anyone else still waiting?! I want CAP 21 and I’m dying here!

When my daughter got her admittance around this past Wednesday, she told me that her close friend who had gotten in ED in Dec. was able to call after that point and find out his studio and so she wanted me to do the same (which I would not have thought to do until she shared that). So, I did call Tisch and at that juncture, was told that they were in the middle of doing the studio assignments and that they would go out on Friday (which is now two days ago) but then they asked me my D's name and they said they would look up if hers was decided yet and they told me Cap21 on the phone. That's all I know at this time. My guess is they should come this week but that doesn't gel with what you were told. Maybe you can get the answer on the phone? Hoping it works out the way you want....let us know.

Thanks, soozievt. This has just been such a long, drawn-out process. I got into Syracuse for musical theatre, and Ithaca for acting, and now I'm just waiting on NYU's studio assignment. I really want to go to NYU, and if I get into CAP I will, but I know how competitive it is. Also, they put me down second for ETW (Experimental Theatre Wing), and I would still go if I received that. I'm just worried that I might get put in a random, straight-acting studio, and although I love acting, I don't want just that. I think theatre kids DEFINITELY have it worst when it comes to the college process. Congrats to your daughter.

Yay admissions!

I ALSO got an answer different than what both of you recieved. When I called last Thursday, the guy told me that decisions should be recieved by this coming week. I spoke to someone in Tisch Drama.

I requested Strasberg and Adler, but I'd be happy anywhere!

vi1...
I am very proud of your accomplishments and you have excellent choices already. I am familiar as well with Syracuse and Ithaca as my D got into both for BFA in MT. The thing is, she truly liked every program and found positive aspects to them all. She knew how hard it would be to get into any program and thankfully kept her mind open and explored each one in case she had no choice. They were all excellent but just different. My D has seriously considered Syracuse and loved it when visiting. She has a friend in the program who loves it and she spoke to many others in it while there who said the same. If the studio you want at NYU does not come through (and even if it does), there are so many great aspects about Syracuse. They seem to have a well balanced program in all three disciplines. They have placement in dance (might be important to you if an experienced dancer). Their semester abroad in London at the Globe Theater sounds incredible. They got a grant for five years (including the year it would affect you) to take their seniors to NYC for an entire semester in the fall. There were plenty of performance opportunities, plus the Syracuse Stage (equity theater) right there. You also get a dose of liberal arts at a good university and have the "college experience" (though that is true Tisch as well). With only 20 kids in the program per year, you get a lot of attention. I thought the director's presentation on the audition day was one of the better ones on our trips. So, you can't go wrong.

For Tisch, my daughter also stipulated second and third choice studios. Second for her was Playwrights Horizons because she happens to be very interested and enjoys writing and directing shows. She chose Stella Adler as third choice as she likes that acting approach. A faculty member from Experimental Theater Wing was her auditioner by the way. But frankly, as much as she would enjoy an acting studio and as much as she LOVES to write/direct//choreograph, I can't see her not doing a musical theater program, and giving up all singing and dancing as that is such a significant part of who she is. She will make a go of trying to have a career on stage in musical theater but I know there is a lot of other things she can do that she is good at, even related to theater. So, your choices are good ones and no matter if you make it in this field or not, you will get a fine college education that will serve you well at either of those three schools. You cannot go wrong. Let me know how it turns out for you.
Susan
PS...are you a boy or girl? Maybe your path will cross with my D's at some point.

I'm a girl and my name is Kathleen. And I hope I do get to meet your daughter at some point!

Great, keep me posted on what school you decide on and eventually we will do the same.

vi1...

As always, soozievt is there to help and has great advice!

Let me just say that she is right - you are lucky and probably can't go wrong with some of these choices you have.

I have 2 d's and d1 would tell you to pick NYU and d2 would tell you to pick Syracuse. Why? because even though the programs have some similariities, they also have differences - just like my daughters!

D1 is a junior at NYU and has loved Tisch and what the city can offer her. Although d2 did not go to Syracuse - it was not an easy decision to turn it down. The reason it became one of her top choices was after visiting the college on one of the accepted student days. It was a wonderful experience. She sat in on acting classes while the parents got to sit around a conference table and talk with Jim Clark for an hour and a half. It was such a great experience for her (and me)! If you liked Jim Clark at the audition - this is really intimate and all questions are welcome! She loved the acting class, students and a performance of Chicago we saw. I will say it was one of the best -if not the best college performance I have seen.
So what I am trying to say is if you can, go back to these schools now that you are accepted, and see what they offer and what it is you need as an individual to grow. They are different, and each one offers unique things the other does not.
Congratultions and good luck!

soozievt-

I called this morning, and one woman was quite abrupt and wouldn't tell me anything, but then I called another woman and she was very nice and told me that they had mailed the assignments out on Friday (yikes!!). So, I should be getting it in the mail today around noon or so. Let's hope for the best!

vi1, thanks for taking the time to let me know what happened. I am glad you tried. Actually you were told what I was, which is that the studio assignment would be mailed out this past Friday, so maybe it is in your mailbox when you get home from school. I don't know why she was willing to tell my D her studio but it does not matter now because your time has come. Let me know.

Susan

Well, the moment of truth has come. I was not accepted into CAP, but rather into Playwright's Horizons Theatre School, which, from waht I have gathered, is basically a combination of acting, directing, vocal performance, and dance/movement. If anyone knows anything else, please let me know! I'm not heartbroken, just looking for information!

vi1--

Did the studio assignment come by regular mail? I'm international, and my acceptance came UPS, so it came early, but regular mail will probably take over a week.

Thanks!

There is a LJ sight that you might find useful in answering your questions http://www.livejournal.com/community/_tisch_/

You have great choices, congratutions!

vi1, I am sorry you did not get your first choice studio and I do not know your other college options. However, I can tell you that my daughter considered Playwrights if she had not gotten into Cap, given her particular interests that include writing, directing, choreographing. I have heard it is great and I think it would be best for you to talk to students in that program (we would have done the same if need be). I know one girl who is a senior who was in CAP21 originally but switched after two years into Playwrights Horizons and is currently working with a choreographer.

September, I don't know how long the studio assignment letters take but it has not arrived at our house here in VT today either.

vi1,
Also, my s is in playwrights. Has had a great 1st year. Takes private voice as a 2 credit elective and takes a couple of dance classes/wk at Broadway Dance.

soozievt (and everybody else. hi!)-

My other options are Syracuse University for musical theatre and Ithaca for acting. I'm kind of leaning toward SU now for MT, because it's really what I want. We'll see; PHTS is not a flop either, I know. But musical theatre is truly my love, so I may not be in NYC next year.

vi1...I think you are thinking very wisely about your choices. If your true passion is musical theater and given the options you have and my familiarity with them, I would choose Syracuse which is a fantastic MT program. The other options are great too but are not the best fit for YOU, particularly since you have the great MT option at Syracuse. I was very impressed by their program and my kid has considered it. I think you would be happiest in a MT program and thankfully you have a fantastic option in that area. The other two programs are GREAT but aren't truly what youwere looking for. I think you have had an excellent outcome given the selectivity of those programs, so congratulations.
All the best,
Susan

I'll be looking for vi1inscontrivr up in lights one day! If you follow your heart on this one, you're sure to end up in the program that best meets your needs. Congrats! I'm sure Syracuse would provide a wonderful experience.

Thanks so much, everybody. This has been a really tough day. I said earlier that I "wasn't heartbroken," but I kind of was. Thank you for all of your support. I just need some time to sleep on all this information and better make my decision. I'll keep you updated.

vi1, It is OK to feel disappointed when a decision from a particular college is not as you had hoped. It is more than OK to feel that way. The best thing, however, is to sleep on it and have your down moment and then just move forward because honestly, you have some other great options here and trust me, NEXT year at this time, you are gonna be a happy camper at college and all this angst and stress over where you got in or did not get in, will be past and a distant memory and won't hold so much importance in your mind any longer. The good news is that you have some really positive offers on your table. I hope you can go through a day of disappointment and then just start fresh and look at what you DO have. I know my kids did within hours of a rejection and just moved forward and knew that it was not meant to be at that particular school and eventually things worked out for them and they are happy. So, it is ok to be heartbroken. But if you can brush that aside after a little "down" time, you'll do fine. Life is full of disappointments and you grow stronger with each one and luckily for you, there are so many bright aspects to your college choices and days ahead. Sleep on it all....this is the climax but the transition will get you to the next level and it is gonna be a happy one, I feel certain.
