NYU Tisch Waitlist 2018

Mine is also waitlisted for NYU Tisch (acting, not musical theatre) and we’re going to proceed with Emerson, then see where the chips fall as the various rounds of waitlist kids get accepted at NYU.

Does anyone know if all/any of the studios seek out a certain mix of types? My daughter is in one of the least represented minority groups, so I’m not sure if her acceptance hinges on only girls of her ethnicity/race not keeping their spot as accepted students? I totally forget if NYU was one that has quotas for looks. TY!

Hey @twinGMom - I can’t speak for each studio but NYU as a whole made a big deal on the accepted student day about the increase in accepted students from URM groups in this year’s acceptances. My D said the dean of admission said there was no one majority ethnicity in the class of 2022, which was pretty awesome to hear. The group of students on my D’s group chat for NSB seems to be a good mix of ethnicities and not representative of a distribution of “X% of the class must be of X background”. I would be really surprised if they used a racial quota system but I’d guess being an URM won’t hurt your daughter’s chances of clearing the waitlist. I’m just speaking from what I can see as a parent, I don’t know how they choose who gets an offer when they go to the WL.

@bissou the percentage you are quoting is definitely more likely to be for Tisch School of the Arts as a whole which has many majors, not just for the Drama. Also I don’t believe the 500 number is correct for drama acceptance. Not every studio takes the same amount. Some have 50, some have many fewer than that. Add to that the fact that the academic acceptance rate for NYU as a whole dropped to 19% this year (and that is a hurdle all Tisch students need to pass to get into the drama program). Last year I was hearing unofficial numbers of much higher than 2,000 for drama (there are no prescreens don’t forget) and I’m sure that number has only grown.

@Spike27 I was just quoting numbers that previous posters gave  and also trying to lift the spirits of those trying to get into Tisch with positive thoughts. The numbers whatever they are seem to be a bit better than most programs that are in the low teens. If Tisch is 19%, 27%, or 30% whatever the numbers truly are (everyone seems to have their own opinion) at least they are higher than most other schools. That’s a positive or at least it is in my mind. Tisch is highly competitive, I get it. And for those with kids at Tisch, I’m not trying to diss your kids admittance into a highly competitive school. Seem like we are splitting hairs. Good luck to those on the waitlist. Hang in there. If Tisch is your dream don’t give up!!!

@bissou I, too, think those on the waiting list should remain positive. Many kids did get on the WL last year I remember. But I also think it’s important to be as accurate as possible about the numbers if we have more accurate ones based on information from recent years and the 19% isn’t just an opinion, it’s a number NYU has been posting about their 2022 class publicly throughout the last month.

No I don’t have better numbers and I believe the 19% wholeheartedly. I was using numbers that someone on CC had posted. I admitted my wrongdoing when I said 25% when that was for all of Tisch. I am sorry for the misinformation. I am confused at the discomfort I am receiving and the belief that I am in some way putting down Tisch by asking questions or giving my opinion. Again, Whether your kid got in under the 30% acceptance rate or the 19% your kid got into NYU!! Not sure why this is such a big deal. Sorry for ruffling feathers. My kid is attending a non auditioned school that is often scoffed at and I have never felt that I needed to defend her choice. If you read the above link it says that over the past couple of years the rate has gone down form in the 30’s to now 19%. Not sure I am giving wrong numbers. But if I am again, skip over my post and look ahead to next year when I am sure the acceptance rate will be 5%.

Sorry I didn’t mean to be misleading. Others were indicating WL for film or dance and I was just clarifying that my D had applied for theatre/drama. She said she would like to be considered for all studios even though she would prefer MT/NSB.

I applied as external transfer for drama. Any word as to what the yield rate is for non-freshman hopefuls?

Are any of you rejecting the waitlist for tisch drama and do you guys have an idea of how many people were waitlisted for drama?

@actingmommy88 I said yes to the waitlist for Tisch Drama, but I’m also wondering the same thing. I’m not sure how many were waitlisted for drama, but i’d love to know to see what my chances are!

@actingmommy88 My D just released her Tisch spot (we can’t swing the cost) - she was placed in Stella Adler. I enjoy the thought of making a kid so happy when they come off the waitlist. I hope a CCer gets it!!

@ginaf1102 Please let us know what the cost is for Tisch Drama. Thank you very much. My S just got accepted off the WL.

Congratulations to your son @rbtonic! If you applied for financial aid your cost / aid should be online through Albert.

Thanks @CaMom13, I do not see anything there and we read the email late last night. Does Tisch Drama give merit based scholarships? Thank you.

@Rbtonic - congratulations! So the waitlist is moving already? I thought they weren’t supposed to look at the waitlisted candidates until May.

@Rbtonic congratz!! I didn’t know they were notifying people already. Fingers crossed I’ll get off too

I just heard about someone else getting into Tisch Drama off the waitlist so it is starting to move. Good luck everyone!

@Spike27 thank you! I wonder how many they will accept ahhh so nerve wracking!! best of luck to everyone

@Rbtonic - Tisch is not generally known to give significant merit aide. The vast majority of NYU aide is need based

@Rbtonic That is fantastic news! You must be over the moon! I hope my S gets off too. It is a DREAM school!!! Did they tell you what studio you were placed in? Was it a phone call or an email and did they give you until May 1 or 72 hours to decide?
