NYU, UT Austin, Columbia, American, Georgetown

Demographics: Asian male. Currently a senior in a Texas high school.

Major: Political science

Academics: SAT (post March 2016): 700 math 790 English, class rank: 98/367, GPA: 91.2 weighted.

Courses: Virtually all my early classes were honor courses except for English. Took/will take AP US History, Physics, and Biology. AP scores aren’t so hot; the highest anyone got in our school for APUSH was a 3 if that tells you how much well they prep us for the actual AP test. I have 19 credit hours with a community college and I anticipate about 7 more by the time I graduate.

ECs:
•Speech and debate.
•Model UN – President and Founding member.
•Choir – All Region choir since 7th grade.
•Used to be a cashier.
•UIL Current Events – Team Captain.
•Science Bowl.

Awards/distinctions:
•NSDA (National Speech and Debate Association) Academic All American.
•NSDA Honor Society member: Outstanding Distinction Merit.
•NSDA National Tournament Qualifier.
•Qualified for state level competition in speech/debate about 7 times since sophomore year.
•State finalist in Congressional Debate.
•Placed 2nd at state in a prestigious civics competition sponsored by the State Bar of Texas.

Essays: I’ve had a few of my teachers review some of my essays and they say they definitely show positive character growth, ambition, and a strong passion for politics.

Colleges:
•Columbia (will it matter if I apply ED? I know it’s most likely high up there…)
•NYU – Applying regular for the college of arts and sciences.
•American – Will apply for honors
•UT Austin – I know class rank will hurt me really bad but I’m thinking my high SATs will offset it.
•Georgetown – Applying regular decision

My backups are UNT and Texas Tech (not that I need to know if I can get in those school)

I wouldn’t bother applying to Columbia.

Yeah I figured. How are my chances with the other schools though?

bump

Colombia is a reach georgetown is a high match and the others are matches. NYU, American and UT Austin are low match-match range. As your GPA seems to be normal or above average for all 3 and your SAT scores are towards the top of the schools (NYU American and UT Austin) Also helps that UT Austin has had a high acceptance rate in the past few years.

I think G’town is going to be tough because of your class rank

Yeah I was slacking hard my freshman year…

I disagree with the person who said not to apply to Columbia. ED really does make a difference (although the deadline passed already right?) I live super close to Columbia so they’re pretty generous with our school and if I’ve noticed anything for people who want to get in with Poly Sci as a major. Most of them apply for history or something “easier” like archaeology and then transferred. You’re rank is kind of low, but I don’t think schools really look into that unless you’re valedictorian. Your SAT score is a major booster, the score is really high and your EC’s match your major really well. You def have a good chance at UT and American college. Georgetown looks more into gpa than sat in my experience (my cousin had a really high gpa, but her sat was only a 2100). If I were you, I would add some more colleges onto the list, maybe some more top schools? Goodluck! Please chance me back
