I've been accepted at both NYU and SUNY Purchase as a film major. Does anyone have any advice/suggestions for making a decision?

NYU, imo.

I know a friend there. Btw, can I ask if you submitted a reel or not?

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, I submitted portfolios to both schools, with three shorts. Why do you ask? =)

Would have liked to apply as an undergrad (chose Washu). Gonna' try for masters, although Columbia film is my first choice for then. Still, NYU is no slouch. :) best.

NYU is the second best film school in the country to USC, definitely go NYU.

Thanks for the replies! I've actually decided to go to Purchase -- I think it will offer more of what I want, at a better price. But they're certainly both excellent schools, and I feel priviledged to have been able to choose between them!

Are you a sophmore at SUNY Purchase, now?

It depends on your money situation. If you can pay the tuition without taking loans, NYU is probably the better school. If, however, you need to take out a lot of loans. do NOT GO TO NYU. People who have made it in film usually served as interns for free or started in low paying jobs in the film industry. If you have a lot of college debt, you won't have the wherewithal to take these jobs. Thus, having a lot of college debt will actually adversely affect your ability to make it in the film industry.

Very smart reply taxguy. I know what you say is true. Not only is NYU a crazy amount of money but you pay for your film on top of that. They also stopped paying insurance on third-party equipment rental that you might need because their equipment is not always available when you need it. Most reasonable film schools with good programs in the east are either SUNY Purchase or FSU. How would you be able to take unpaid internships on sets or low-paying positions with a load of debt on your back? Unless you have lots of money and can pay in full, I would consider the schools mentioned.

Is it true that SUNY Purchase accepts only 20 film students each year?

Can I see your submitted portfolio to know what I should have ready?

NYU, UCLA, and USC are the top 3 film schools of the country. They are the film equivalent of Princeton, Yale and Dartmouth. NYU is a personal dream school of mine. NYU accepted less than 250 film production students into the program in 2008, out of the thousands who applied. You should be very honored to be accepted. That being said, SUNY purchase is a wonderful school. It’s not in as great a location, but it is cheaper. For me, I PERSONALLY would go to NYU in a heartbeat and take out as many loans as I could because NYU is my dream school. If NYU isn’t what you truly want in your heart and you are skeptical about it, or if the thought of 50+ grand a year scares you beyond all comprehension, go to SUNY purchase and let another hopeful take that spot at NYU. But if you don’t mind paying a lot for a near perfect education, you want the connections, you are ready for a competitive environment and a HUGE work load, I’d say go for NYU. I know people hate it when others say this, but really, only you can decide what is truly right. Hope my comments helped even the slightest bit!
