How much will you have to borrow for NYU?

I’m not too sure but after visiting the FA office this week, I did some math and learned that I would have to pay approx. 5k more a year if I go to NYU than Bing. And 5k a year adds up and I’m not 100% sure if the education I’ll be getting at NYU will be worth it. I heard more bad things about the education there than good.

Plus I got into Steinhardt which isn’t as highly regarded as Stern or Tisch so that’s another factor.

^Don’t put yourself down – Steinhardt has some excellent programs. Tisch/Stern are amazing but inflated on these boards relative to the rest of NYU. I’m sure most of the “bad things about the education” at NYU you’ve heard are from CCers who don’t go here but base their posts off of what others say. It’s generally very good, but can be hit or miss at times.

I don’t condone going into debt, but if it’s “only” 5k a year it seems somewhat reasonable to me, at least for NYU, a top private college. Binghamton’s good, but the town and weather are bleak and I know just as many unhappy people there as I do at NYU, in spite of the “traditional college experience.” I think the value of connections, internships, and jobs you find at NYU will far surpass those at Binghamton. Binghamton might offer a closer-knit community.

Both are great options. NYU gets the nod in most respects but it all comes down to the experience you want and whether you want any debt.

I’m going into Steinhardt for Applied Psychology and I haven’t heard too much about that program so I’m still on the fence about it.

I think I’ll be happy in both places. The only strong con for Bing is its location and secluded area which will close off a lot of opportunities for me. The only strong con for NYU is of course, the money.

I’m really confused and conflicted right now. Sorry for making everyone read through all of this.

Wow Speaknow, we are almost in the same situation with the exception that I’ve been waitlisted by NYU. I already paid my deposit to Bing but I’m not sure would I’d do if NYU were to take me off the list.

Firstly, NYU is notorious for being stingy with financial aid. Getting off the waitlist would probably hurt me more as I’d be getting the “leftovers.” Perhaps the only incentive to go to NYU is its relatively high ranking compared to Binghamton. I never considered the commute to be an issue though. It’d just be like high school again. (Takes me about an hour and a half to get from Queens to school in New York.) The MTA isn’t too bad.

What concerns me most is the fact that NYU has no real campus. I’d be living at home, deprived of the real college experience.

As of now, I already have my mind on Binghamton. That could change though. Good luck and let me know which school you choose!

I ended up choosing NYU! Thanks for the input. It’s really appreciated.

I hope whatever school you end up going to, whether it’s Binghamton or NYU, you’ll be successful. Both schools are amazing and I know you’ll get an amazing education at Bing. The people there are amazing. I know some people there and have talked to a few Bing students before and all of them were friendly and helpful.

Good luck with everything and let me know how everything turns out in the end!

My heart goes out to all the students who have struggled with their NYU decisions because of finances and other concerns. I hope you will now have peace and joy in developing as a scholar and as a person at NYU.

speaknow, I wish you well and hope you will come back to let us know how this works out for you as a commuter at NYU.
