I'm deciding between the two schools
binghamton U.
pro: located in new york(good for my major, close to nyc) and i plan on transferring to a better school hopefully nyu or something later on so it'd be nice to know the area first.
also i've seen reviews and everyone comments so positively on how nice the people are there. plus, there's a lot of diversity, which i love! one of the most diverse schools in the u.s.
good college overall
con: it's kind of expensive.... they didn't offer me much financial and and i have to pay about $8k more compare to umass
Umass
pro: party school, nice town and weathers a lot better than binghamton. also a good school but it's ranked slightly lower than bing plus it's cheap
con: i know about a handful of people who go there(that i don't like), pretty much no diversity, students are not that nice or so i've heard, trashyy, and someone i knew who went there didn't have a good experience.
sooo
bottomline is it worth to pay $8000 more a year just for a better experience? inputs would be appreciated. please help!

i can’t really compare the two schools, but please realize that binghamton is not near nyc. it is about a 3 1/2 drive (depending on how you hit traffic as you get closer to the city). there are buses that run from campus to nyc most weekends, but i don’t think anyone there really considers binghamton “close” to nyc. going there will not familiarize you with the area around nyu, which is in nyc.

you would meet a lot of students from the nyc metro area at binghamton university (they do represent a large majority). binghamton univ has an excellent reputation in ny and employers from nyc recruit there and know its reputation. so in those regards there is some connection to nyc – but please be realistic as to where geographically it is compared to nyc. also, culturally, there can be a huge difference between nyc and other parts of nys.

where do would you be coming from?

IMO, Binghamton is not $32K better than UMass. I would go with the less expensive option. You are no where near NYC, just about the same distance as you would be with UMass. With UMass, with the consortium, you have options of checking out some of the other schools in the area.

It also comes down to how you are coming up with the difference in cost. If your parents are willing and able to pay so that it is purely a matter of personal preference, it is one thing, but if it is going to cause any financial strain, it is not worth the cost differential is what I think.

Yes I know. A lot of people commented on the fact that binghamton is nowhere near nyc. I do realize that…don’t know why I added that part in. I’m coming from asia, not considered an international student though, since i live on u.s. territory.
Asides from the geographic and financial factor, do you feel that binghamton is better school for business? I know its ranked slightly higher than umass. However umass amherst seems to be more nationally recognized.
I’m just really confused…please share your opinions?

It’s 8k* better :p

were you accepted into binghamton’s school of management? (i don’t know how umass works, whether you get accepted to their business school as a freshman or get in to it later once there) binghamton’s som is very highly ranked – it can also be hard to transfer into if you are not admitted as a freshman.

what rankings are you looking at to compare the schools? are you looking at rankings of the overall schools or of their business programs? according to business week’s 2011 ranking of undergrad business schools [Best Undergraduate Business Schools 2011 - Businessweek/url, binghamton’s school ranks #37, where as umass ranks #72. on what are you basing your conclusion that umass is better known? i live in ny, so i can’t really give a perspective on how well known the schools are outside of ny.

i can not offer any advice as to the financial choice between the two. i don’t know what the difference in ranking actually means in terms of future employment.

see also this ranking from business week that shows ranking for subspecialties within business – <a href=“Businessweek - Bloomberg”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?](<a href=“Bloomberg - Are you a robot?”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?) so you can also compare them in the specific field you are considering.

ok, just found 2012 ranking [Best Undergraduate Business Schools 2012 - Businessweek](<a href=“Bloomberg - Are you a robot?”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?) , binghamton seems to have dropped to #59 and umass up to #64. i wonder how there could have been such a big change in one year and whether that is significant or not. historical data is here [Best Undergraduate B-Schools Ranking History - Businessweek](<a href=“Bloomberg - Are you a robot?”>Bloomberg - Are you a robot?)

Thanks for the info:)
and I was actually accepted into Harpur college of arts and sciences, since I’m majoring in actuarial science, which is similar to financial mathematics. Binghamton is one of the few schools that offers this course…

Bing is ranked a bit higher in the overall ranking as well. It’s just that umass seems more “well known”? My counsellor and classmates told me that umass is a better school when Bing is ranked higher. i don’t know why.

I think have a better idea as to where I’m gonna go now. Thanks for the help!
