NYU vs Boston University

NYU-Spring Admission 2022 or Boston University-Kilachand Honors College Fall 2021. Thoughts?

Can you give some pros and cons to each of those schools

In general, I’ll say BU - only because you can start on time. That’s the info you gave. Starting mid-year in general will set you behind socially, etc.

That said, what are you studying, what are your costs, etc?

If costs aren’t a concern and given the (lack of) info, why not take the honors college at the peer school over the spring admit?

As PurpleTitan says, you’re not offering much to go on. BU is offering you an honors college experience and a fall start. Both offer a great urban college experience. They are peer schools in terms of overall reputation (although you haven’t said what you hope to study, and their strengths aren’t identical across the board). The fact that you haven’t decided yet suggests that there’s something you prefer about NYU, that’s balancing out the points in favor of BU. If you could explain what the pros and cons are from your perspective, it would enable people to give more useful feedback.

BU+Fall start +Honors >>>> NYU Spring.

I appreciate all this feedback. I’m asking on behalf of my daughter who would study Communications at Boston University/Kilachand Honors College. At NYU, she would study media, culture, and communications. We are not focused on costs which are very similar (versus the higher costs of living in NYC in general).

She wants a campus in a city experience which both offer. Not the most important question, but does anyone have opinions on which school has a more “campus” feel? I’ve heard arguments for both.

Thanks to all. Just looking for overall thoughts as we have to make this decision very soon.

BU Honors college…take it!

Boston has so many colleges. You can start and immerse in the school at the right time. Starting in spring isn’t good. Bu is great for communication although the major in general is not easy (for jobs). I personally don’t see why NYU is in consideration. Good luck to you

BU for Fall + Honors. :+1:
Not sure why NYU Spring is on the table

Another vote for BU with Honors. IMO it is nicer/easier to start with the rest of the class and being in the Honors program is a plus.

There are a handful of schools where NYU has a clear edge over BU because they are among the tops in the country (Stern, Tisch, and Courant), but communications isn’t one of them. Outside of the schools I listed (and economics), NYU and BU are peers. In fact, BU communications majors (slightly) outearn NYU communications majors out of college on average. Given that she gets the honors college at BU and spring admit at NYU, this is a no-brainer.

BU has more of a “campus feel” as a baseline, and the opportunity to live in honors-specific housing will amplify the sense of having a campus base. In this situation, I can’t imagine giving up BU Kilachand Honors to take a spring admit offer at NYU, in a major that isn’t one of NYU’s particular strengths, unless for some reason I felt I had to be in NYC vs. Boston. (Personally I prefer Boston anyway - unbeatable as a student city IMO - but even if I slightly preferred New York, I’d go with BU in this case - vastly better experience to join the fall class in Honors at BU vs. straggling in as a spring admit at NYU. Love the college that loves you!

Just adding in another vote for BU. NYU offers no advantage for comms, both are city schools, and BU offers the slight edge on campus vibe, though both very much are integrated into the area of the city. I don’t see any reason to go NYU here. If it’s NYC, a BU comms grad can go intern and work there postgrad, speaking as a Northeastern grad living in NYC. Plenty to do in Boston for the college years and more if you want to stay longer.
