NYU vs. Michigan

I was hoping I could get some feedback from the College Confidential community regarding these two schools. I am currently a freshman at the College of William and Mary and have been accepted as a transfer student to Literature, Science, and Arts at the University of Michigan and the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU.

The reason I left William and Mary was because it did not offer a major in International Business (my intended major). Furthermore, it did not offer any Persian courses. My goal is to major in International Business with a concentration in Middle Eastern Cultural Studies and Persian language. I hope to eventually do business in the Middle East and think that learning about the differing cultural sensitivities in the Mid-East region is important to understand so you can align yourself appropriately to do business with each country.

If I were to attend Michigan, I would apply to the Ross School of Business after completing the necessary prerequisites. However, if I were to attend NYU I would not be going to Stern but rather Gallatin. I chose Gallatin because it would allow me to design my own major and virtually I could go ahead and concentrate on doing International Business (in Stern), as well as Middle Eastern Cultural Studies and Persian Language Studies (in the College of Arts and Science).

But, I'm worried that if I do attend Gallatin, I will not get a legitimate shot at business internships and instead the Stern kids would overshadow me. If I were to attend Michigan and be accepted to the Ross School of Business I do think I would go through the system and eventually find internship and job offerings pretty easily.

In essence, is Gallatin okay for business? I know that there will be some internships that will be offered to me as a Gallatin student but will I be competitive with the business students in Stern for internship and job opportunities? Will I be looked at?

Personally, I would rather go to NYU as I enjoy the city life and believe that it is more aligned with what I want in a college. Nevertheless, I would be more than happy to go to Michigan. I just don't want to pay $50,000 + at NYU per year in tuition and in the long run not get what I hoped for. I am positive I want to enter the business world and am worried that Gallatin might not be the best gateway to doing that.

Thanks

I think the critical question is whether NYU Gallatin will allow you to essentially get a business degree without being admitted to Stern (note, as a transfer, you cannot transfer again within NYU...). I know there is a cap on credits taken at Stern for students in other NYU schools, but this is less clear about Gallatin (I couldn't find anything quick on the web site).

Your best bet is to talk with an advisor (found this link on the Gallatin site: Sophomores should contact Patrick McCreery at Patrick.mccreery@nyu.edu or 212-998-7351).

There's also the apples and oranges thing campus wise. Contrary to what the the Michigan moderators say, I truly believe that being in New York gives an advantage over just about anywhere in the country for internships (in any fields)

No doubt they are both excellent universities, what a great choice to have to make!
