NYU vs Pitzer

Hi so I'm from NJ... I didn't think I'd be choosing between either NYU or Pitzer, honestly, I almost didn't apply to either of them. Pomona was my first choice, definetely a reach, I always loved Lafayette and got in but ruled it out because it's boring compared to these two, and CMC was close to the top, too. I want to do International Fashion Business, as fashion and culture are my passions - so I'm not sure my mind will change that much. Obviously NYU is the best choice for pursuing that in terms of internships, etc, not to mention with "NYU" on my degree I am MADE (also ranked higher, more well known obviously). But Pitzer out in California is in the Claremont Colleges which have so many benefits, but LA is an hour away so I can't imagine interning there so easily. I visited Pomona & CMC & wanted to go there so badly but didn't get in either and I don't have time to visit Pitzer before May 1st when I have to choose (now $1200 for tix to go 1 day!), but I don't think visiting would help me choose - I need to figure out my priorities, becuase I feel like I'm choosing between college (Pitzer) and a career (NYU). I know they'd both be fun, just different kinds of fun. I know NYU would be amazing it's like a dream school even though it doesn't have a 'campus.' I could always come back to grad school at NYU, (which I'd plan to do if I went to pitzer but not if I went to NYU b/c I'd already be there) but that's four years later, 'wasted' if you will; am I screwing myself over by leaving those opportunities and getting older then coming back to them? By the way, I'd be at Gallatin at NYU, where I could make my own specific major. Pitzer also has a lot of freedom with classes, and I know I'd get a great education there, but I'm afraid I'll get sidetracked or lazy or just older, I could try to intern in NYC in the summers but... I don't know!! I can't imagine this being any harder!! I know it's my choice but I need feedback please! Basically, is it worth the four years out there? (I also want to mention I've always wanted to model which I could do in NYC while I'm in school but four years later I wouldn't be able to because I'd be too old, also I'm a huge Yankees fan!! i know I shouldn't choose based on that but just a thought) Oh and also, they are both expensive, but Pitzer a little less so (they gave me a little trustee scholarship) but it's not THAT big of a difference, and money isn't really an issue at all, esp since i'd spend it at nyu for grad school anyway. oh haha and another thing I go to the city a lot now cuz its convenient and Ive taken summer classes at FIT WHICH I could do while I was at NYU, so I can be a city girl or a campus girl, becuase I also go to a boarding prep school in NJ (which lafayette reminded me of) so I'm already independent and the distance isn't a reason not to go out there. If I'm in the city I feel like I'm not an individual, is that important?, but then again if I go out there everyone I know will feel like I left for good and forget about me...

If you went to Pitzer you would have the opportunity to take classes at Pomona or CMC, (which are only 2 blocks away) or to even spend a year living in a Pomona dormitory such as Oldenborg Center for foreign languages. Plus, Pomona and Pitzer share athletic teams, so either way, you would still get to "chirp" for the Mighty Sagehens at football games.

The main difference between NYU and Pitzer is surrounding area. NYU is in Manhattan, while Pitzer is located in the quiet Southern California suburb of Claremont. The distance from Los Angeles isn't a problem for most students, there is so much to do near Claremont anyway, such as going up to the snow at Mt. Baldy (just a few miles east of campus), Disneyland or the beach. There are also lots of activities on campus, Pitzer is the home of the famed Kohoutek Comet Festival.

Good luck to you wherever you choose to go.

what UCLA Band Mom said... Pitzer students can take lots of classes at Pomona, CMC, and god forbid if you're engineering inclined, with the geniuses at Harvey Mudd (another block away). Pomona and CMC are just a 60 second bike ride away. Actually you can get to all five of the Claremont Colleges quicker than you can get walk from the UCLA dorm to the closest UCLA classroom.

My thought after reading your post was "it sounds like she wants to go to NYU"...you just spoke about it much more...

i really don't know where i want to go, i want to go to pitzer because i love it but i want to go to nyu because i love its opportunities. oh and also i know about cross-registering at the 5C's.
any advice anybody?

I would take NYU. You are more likely to end up living in the New York City area than in California, and the contacts that you make at NYU will be important. You will be able to keep up with many friends, network, etc. Pitzer is a good school, but it does not have any special strengths in fashion or international business.

It sounds like you want to go to NYU more than Pitzer. You should choose NYU, just because you will never have the opportunity to explore your interest in careers i.e. such as fashion other than when you're in college, and NYC is the place to do that.

It's very hard to get worthwhile internships in NYC while you're in school in LA.

Fashion companies, fashion publications will not wait for someone to fly out from LA just to interview for a summer position. There are too many people in NY seeking those jobs and you have to be there if you want a career in the fashion industry.

For fashion, I would think just being in the New York City area would be a major bonus.

Also, I live next to Pitzer and I have friends who go to NYU and in general I would go to NYU first, despite the bonus of getting to take classes at the other 5Cs. NYU and Pitzer student bodies are very similar in that they like to have fun I think. There is also the fact that there is a maximum number of classes you can take at Pitzer per semester (this might be only when starting out though). It gets mocked a lot by the other 5Cs for being a slacker school.
