HELP!!! family lives in california......decision is whether to stay in california, in which case choice is USC vs Scripps vs Pitzer........or do I goto NYC, choice is NYU vs Barnard ? woman, liberal arts major in english/philosophy.....1 week left to decide! really appreciate insight. Thanks!

Personally, I would stay in California if I were you. You couldn’t go wrong by going to one of the two Claremont colleges; USC is too big for my tastes.

While I am not a women’s college booster, I think that Scripps and Barnard would be my top choices in your case.

It really comes down to the draw of NYC – how important is that to you? Do you feel like being in the city would be a dream come true, or are you at all concerned that it might be a distraction from getting all you can out of your undergrad years? If NYC is the dream, then Barnard. On the other hand, the beauty of Scripps is unrivaled and the 5Cs a great plus.
Both schools offer solid academics with the ability to take classes at their excellent “partner” schools.

Cost? Of each?

Thanks all…agree staying in california (and choosing Scripps or Pitzer) is more comfortable, wondering if missing out on something by not going to NYC/Barnard? NYC has appeal, but not huge. If (say) Barnard scored 9 out of 10 points overall, would Scripps/Pitzer be 8 points? or 5-6 points? (academically, reputation, grad schol placement, overall desirability)…if both were similar, then I would choose Scripps/Pitzer…

costs of all are the same or similar…

truly appreciate everyones feedback! Thanks

If the appeal of NYC isn’t huge than I don’t think the quality of life trade off is worth it.

Scripps campus, dorms, food, facilities, weather are sooo much better.

If you are giving Barnard a 9 for the attributes you mentioned, than I would rank Scripps close behind with an 8 to 8.5. Pitzer would be at 6 or 7. I think the consensus is that Scripps is the stronger school academically. Grad school placement and reputation-wise Scripps is more than solid, and of course, you have the ability to draw on the resources of the other consortium schools, including Pitzer.

Thank you broetchen, that is very helpful…I am touring Scripps tomorrow…will post impressions. USC tour is sunday…but more inclined towards Scripps at the moment, although supposedly USC spirit is higher??

If you really like the element of big sports, then definitely USC has more spirit. The 5Cs sports scene is naturally going to be much smaller, but people seemed enthusiastic about their teams there and also a lot of intramural stuff going on.

Have fun on the tour, try to check out the other college’s resources and facilities in addition to Scripps’, because you will be able to access all of those as a Scripps student.

So, cali2014, have you made your decision? What did you think of your Scripps tour?
Are you staying in Cal or heading to the Big Apple?

If it were me, I would narrow it down to Scripps and Barnard. From there, I would ask myself if I would rather stay in CA or live in NYC. Personally, I love both places.

For your interests, the claremont colleges are perfect; there is a cultural flowering going on over there
