NYU vs. Settling?

So NYU was my top choice school, but I never thought I would get in so I didn't put much thought into it. Now that I got in, I have to decide between going to NYU, going tremendously in debt, but having the incredible experience at my dream school and the opportunities NYC has, or settling on the University of Florida, which is completely covered for me. So not the same experience, larger school and larger classes, but no debt up to my eyeballs. Anyone else in the same boat?

How much debt are we talking about? NYU may be your dream school, but NO WAY should you start off your post-college years with tens of thousands in debt. Really think about this. High debt will cripple you for a while, and if you’re thinking of going to law school or medical school, it isn’t an option.

You can always spend a semester at NYU as a visiting student. We have a “Spring in New York” program that allows students from other schools to stay at NYU. You can also take classes at NYU over the summer.

I plan on going into med school which is why I’m really uneasy about it. And I’m not sure how much debt it would be yet, once the financial aid package comes I’ll know, but from what I’ve seen and heard, their financial aid isn’t very good.

You won’t be making that much money straight out of med school, and even during residency. I strongly, strongly urge you to talk to your parents about this. I know NYU seems like a dream, but I’ve seen first hand how bad it can get for medical students with lots of debt. This is kind of a sore spot for me, and my entire family is full of people in the medical field. There’s lots of options if you want to take classes at NYU and stay in New York for a few months, or even (eventually) applying to NYU School of Medicine.
