NYU vs UMaryland:CP

Hey. I've seen you around on the CC forums and I understand that you chose CP over NYU at one point in your life. I'm in the same situation right now as a resident of Maryland. It'll cost me 20k to attend CP (4.5k for 2 yrs scholarship not included) and 50k to attend NYU per year. I put down mathematics as my major because I haven't decided what type of career I want to pursue, and I'm good at math (a.k.a 800 sat math, taking differential equations as senior). I don't quite know what I want to do at this point, but I'm thinking either medicine or busienss. I am hoping that I will realize what I want to do by the end of the 1st year, but I have no clue at this point. I want to sit on a load of cash, but that's not my main reason for choosing a career. So anyways, my family household income is 150k+ per year (with a lot of that disappearing with our house and car payments). My parents will be able to afford the first year of NYU cleanly, but may have to borrow a little after that. However, I don't want my parents to have to worry about money. Academically, I am aware than college park honors (i got into gemstone too) and NYU are similar. I'm not too sure which atmosphere would fit me better. While I like the whole campus feel, I also like the feel of the city (haven't been in the city much; lived in suburbs all my life). NYU has better mathematics + economics majors than Maryland. I don't really know what to do at this point. It's a tough decision because I don't really know what I want at this point in terms of college atmosphere and career prospects. If you could help spell out the pros and cons of each school and give me your opinion about which school I should attend this fall, that would be great. Thanks in advance and sorry this is so long.

jesus, have you ever heard of paragraphs? that thing is impenetrable.

^^^lol^^^^

visited both campuses yet?

i got into gemstone too. i really really really really like the concept of the program. but i am also considerate of my parent's financial situation (much worse of than your parents'), so i would never dream of paying outofstate/private tuition if i did not go to what I deem to be an "exceptional" school. although CP honors/gemstone is pretty good, i just could not set a cutoff lower than NYU (i too am aware of NYU's math/economics/business superiority).

CP is a little too big for me. NYU is big, but not as big as CP.

i find NYU's atmosphere a little depressing. i hope i really don't notice it while attending.

i more or less am in a similar situation to you (not with CP though), but will probably pick NYU.

I just visited Maryland and really liked it. I think Maryland would be the better choice if I were to pursue a medical career, while NYU would be the better choice if I were to pursue business. However, I wasn't accepted into NYU's business school so I'm not sure if it will be the smartest idea to go there.

Here's a pro/con chart of why I want to go to each school so you guys can help me see things I haven't seen yet.
Prospective Major - Mathematics w/ possible double major in economics
Prospective Career - Doctor, Math-related business (Finance, Actuary, I-banking) I can't really decide at this point

NYU Pros
City life (I've only been to new york twice and have liked the feel. The question is will I like it 3 years from now)
Strong math + economics program (I don't plan on doing research on math. I just chose math b/c it's versatile and I like doing it)
Better Rep
More opportunities to excel in business
Professional aura
Dorms!!

NYU Cons
***** load of money (47k/yr)
Seemed kinda quiet when I went there but then again I only visited the library and university center
No sports (lacking school spirit)

UMD Pros
University Honors Classes + Gemstone Program (looks good to me and will probably provide an education comparable to NYUs)
School Spirit (GO TERPS!)
Much cheaper (around 15k/yr)
It seemed like there was much more stuff going on
Convenient (close to home)

UMD CONS
State school so a lot of dumbarses everywhere

is it possible to get university-wide scholarships later in college? I didn't receive any for freshman year at NYU

To the posters who are undecided, NYU has one of the best business schools in the world (not just the U.S.); you want to ensure that you apply to a school that will best prepare you for your chosen field. NYU also has of the best mathematics and economic departments in the U.S. If I were you, I would be concentrating on which school will provide me with the best chance to succeed in my desired careers.
