So I was awarded and granted a total of 46,500 to cover most of NYU tuition. I still need another 7000 for tuition and not to forget transportation, books, school supplies and more. I would like to know if you think I’m getting a good deal or if I should just run to CCNY college and avoid the stress and subsidized loans.
It’s a good deal if you can afford it! That’s really what it comes down to. You can automatically get $5500 in Direct loans, up to $3500 of it interest subsidized until you graduate. And can take out slightly more each year in these loans. If your parents are turned down by PLUS, you can take another $4k in unsubsidized Direct loans. this year. If not you have to come up with the additional $1500 at least.
You will pay about the same for living expenses, supplies, books and transportation if you go CUNY. It’s the tuition differential that matters.
You have to make that decision as to whether or not it’s worth the extra loans, money to go to NYU.
@katstevens22 , it’s not easy to answer a question about how much debt a student/family should take on. It is a very personal decision with several factors involved: family income; family debt; family’s comfort with college debt; etc. Only you and your family can answer all those questions.
You mentioned two options, NYU and CCNY. Did you apply to any other schools? If so, did any other them offer enough money to make your amount due less than if you attended NYU?
Depends upon your career goals & what you plan to study at NYU.
Without more information, $24,000 per year for an NYU education & pedigree is a great deal. But, everything is relative; relative to your other options, your financial situation, your career goals & your intended major–to name a few areas of consideration.
Does that amount include room & board? If it does, I can say that’s a very reasonable offer. If not, I’d say it’s not at all. If I remember right, NYU housing is quite expensive.
Thank you all for the advice.
If you’re eligible for a TAP Grant your family income isn’t high. It sounds like the net cost of NYU would eat up a large chunk of it. I’d attend the CUNY school and avoid debt.
Lets look at it this way. You have $7,000 left to pay in tuition. If you were at a state university, that scholarship would suck because the average tuition is about $12k. All that scholarship says is how incredibly overpriced NYU is. Unless you can come out with under 30k in student loans, it’s not worth it. Have you applied for scholarships at other schools? You should try University of Alabama, TCU and Baylor.
No, I’m a New Yorker and plan on staying in New York. Besides NYU I applied to a bunch of CUNY colleges which won’t cost me a cent to attend however Im not a fan and I feel NYU will open more doors for me.I’m also a transfer student so I already have my associates degree. I was told I will be able to complete the bachelors in two years at NYU.
If you can come up with money, whether it’s through parents, your working, a loan , etc, and you are not already up to your ears in debt, go for it.
There are kids for whom even a couple thousand dollar, far less even , that is obtainable. You need about $7k to give NYU. On top of that, whatever other college costs which you well know already. Can you do this it? Can you and your parents handle any loans dnd hardships that may happen with this this? If you can swing it, do so.
What’s your net cost at NYU? Do you/your family have to borrow more than the $7500 federal student loan to attend?
