Oakes

I think we need to start college specific threads.

I was placed in Oakes, wanted Crown first because I'm doing astrophysics and wanted to be with the science guys.

Is the "Science Community" at Oakes really strong?
If I want to avoid pot, can I without being outcast at Oakes?
Is Oakes supportive of those who want to work really hard and do really well?

I've heard from professors that the top 5% at UCSC are as good as any at the best Ivy's, but the bottom 50% are just looking to get by. What % of Oakes are really committed to the best and what % are just looking for HS with benefits...

should I look to appeal?

I’m doing astrophysics and I’m in college 8. I dont think the colleges matter all too much.

you avoid pot by not smoking pot.

seriously, if there was a gun on a table in front of you, would you shoot yourself with it? i would hope you wouldn’t, you would either take that gun to the proper authorities, throw it away, or ignore it.

And i wouldn’t worry about what major you are studying and which college you are in.

I am a transfer student, and I’ve been reading on CC that some are already finding out what college they are in. How do I go about finding out which college I am in?

@zabdullah, thanks man, your insight is precious.

i agree with zabdullah

I was in oakes my freshman year. Oakes was not my 1st choice and i wanted to appeal to but i didnt and stuck with oakes. I am mcd bio major and have lots of friends in science/engineering field that lived in oakes. as long as you find the right friends to study/hangout with you’re fine. pot and partying will not be an issue for you.

I gotta say that oakes has the most friendliest people on campus! i think we’re the only college that has free food & quiet studying event the week before finals… and theres always events held in OLC that the NA/CA hold! Oakes is a good choice. Im going to be living in oakes apartment this coming school year.
