Accepted!!! Can’t wait to be an Obie!

DD accepted with merit.

D got in with a huge math/science scholarships!!

accepted with 43k aid and 10k scholarship. international student

Is anyone going to All Roads Lead to Oberlin in April? The schedule sounds great. I would love to hear about experiences from last year.

Accepted! $16k scholarship. Stats: 3.6/3.8 weighted; 1420 sat; 32 ACT; legacy (grandfather and sister). Outstanding vocal performer – she applied to the double degree program but wasn’t invited to audition for the conservatory. Oberlin is still a great place to study music – her older sister did a history/music composition double major in the college, but she got faculty lessons at the conservatory by audition which is rare for students of the college. My daughter may end up choosing to go somewhere else where she’ll be the star of the music department rather than a second-class citizen. Otherwise, culturally, academically, it’s a perfect fit.

Hi all! My D is a first-year at Oberlin and it was the best decision she’s ever made. Students are interesting and interested, and really care about making the world a better place. She loves all her classes and has already branched out into areas of study she never expected. It’s a college where, if you are open to a variety of activities, there is always something to do or see, from operas and concerts to themed DJ nights, Bob Ross painting events, salsa dancing… as well as the usual rounds of parties in independent houses. We’re from NYC and my D went to a huge, intensely competitive high school. She was looking for something smaller where students work hard and care about their studies, but where there is not that competitive edge. She has found it there. The new president is absolutely DYNAMITE and is going to carry Oberlin into a new era.

I swear I have not been paid for this! I’m just so happy that she is so happy.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Also, I do remember last year that decisions rolled out over a few weeks. Not sure if that will happen again. Oberlin was the last school my D heard from, and fortunately she got a terrific scholarship that made it even easier to say yes.

Did you go to the all roads program? @2021BKMom

We did not, because we had visited in the fall and by the time March rolled around, my D was 100% sure Oberlin was her school. So there was no need. But if you’ve never visited or are trying to decide between two or three top choices, I think it’s a good idea.

@klbmom18 My D did not do All Roads because it conflicted with her schedule. She did do a full day campus visit that included classroom visits, eating at the dining hall, etc. It confirmed that Oberlin was her first choice. It is a kind, caring place with dedicated students, challenging coursework, and depth in performing arts of all kinds. Like @2021BKMom Oberlin is not paying me to sing its praises. I have never seen my kid so happy.

At orientation, they put on a (free) concert at Finney Chapel that was phenomenal. If a conservatory concert is part of All Roads, that alone is worth making the trip!

For you and anybody else considering Oberlin, do check out the student blogs if you haven’t done so already. They do a good job of showing what Obies are like. And congratulations! It’s a very special place.

If anybody has questions, feel free to PM me.

I will pm you. D recieved a fantastic merit award. She hasnt visited but attended several local events and interviewed. I found the admissions team that visited here particularly thoughtful in their desire to get to know the kids. So she plans to visit and now i think H and I want to go too!

amcquilk, does Oberlin have vocal performance major? I always thought there is no such thing - or can Oberlin students do something in the line of music theory with vocal?

My daughter is also a very happy first year and we did attend All Roads last spring despite the fact that she applied ED and knew she was attending Oberlin. It was a great trip! PM me if you have questions about that or Oberlin in general. My daughter is an intended creative writing and Asian studies major but has a large group of friends from sciences to the Con.

@inanebabbler ,
Congrats for your great achievement!!!
Could please post detailed stats & country.

oberlin essay was about how I don’t usually care about the world’s problems and how I want to change that. Going to oberlin would make me a better person in life.

I also e-mailed my admissions rep around late February to tell her how much I like Oberlin( a LOCI).

@StJohnny - The college has a major in “Musical Studies” which is not performance-based, although it does involve some years of lessons and participation in ensembles (I think two years of each). Majors choose a concentration in areas such as music history, theory, or ethnomusicology. You can’t major in vocal performance at the college, only at the Conservatory.

Accepted! I haven’t officially made a decision, but so until I get my other decisions in, Oberlin is my first choice! Especially since I was chosen to be a Frederick Oberlin scholar with 19k/yr with plenty of aid
