Obtaining in-state tuition

My son has been accepted to USC for Fall 2016. We are out of state and will have to pay out-of-state tuition rates because he did not receive any merit scholarships to qualify for in-state tuition. My parents live in SC and said that we could list our son at their address so that he can qualify for in-state tuition. Out-of-state tuition at USC is over $40,000 so we are looking for ways to cut this cost! Does anyone know anything about this or have any experience with getting in-state tuition for a non-SC resident?

Here is the link from the University website: http://registrar.sc.edu/html/residency. He would have had to live for 12 months minimum in SC with you (living with grandparents doesn’t count as he is your dependent, not theirs).

The residency forms require the person who student is dependent on to fill out forms and asks things like how long you’ve lived in SC (with addresses), do you own car registered in SC (and info), etc so it’s not just where your son lives.

Are you are your husband or any grandparents USC alumni? The deadline was April 1 for applying for Alumni Scholarships via the USC Alumni Association. If your son meets the qualifications, it wouldn’t hurt to ask if applications were still being considered.

Not sure what your son’s major is but my son’s roommate in his freshman year (from Virginia) chose a major that was not offered in any school he could get in - in Virginia (Marine Biology - pre-med program), so he was able to go to USC with in-state tuition.
