Obtaining Internships

Hey (another high schooler hijacking the parents forum!):

Factoring into my college decision is ability to get interships. I am about 95% sure I'll be going to the University of Maryland - College Park for journalism (there are a couple people on this board in my boat :)). However, I was wondering how difficult it is to obtain non-regional internships? Ex. if I wanted to work in New York City, San Francisco, or Chicago, would it be very difficult to obtain internships there from a school in Maryland? Or is there no preference given to regional schools?

Also, if any parent's child has obtained a journalism internship, what types of things have they found employers are most impressed with? Strong grades and writing samples, clips from the school paper, or both? Would choosing not to get too heavily involved with the paper my freshman year hurt my chances for an internship? I know it's very hard for freshman to get internships at all, but I've always been an over-achiever!

Thanks :D.
