Obtaining money for an internship - help quick!

Hey guys, just today I was invited to join a summer internship at a PR firm based in NYC. There are a few problems with this. First, I live six hours away. My cousins attend Columbia and have an apartment there that I could probably stay at for a couple months, but for me to do this internship I need money to defray the costs of food, transportation and I might dole out some money for rent at my cousins place too.

I said that I would let them know by this Friday whether I accept or decline the invitation. I really want to do this internship and it's the only place I've heard back from, so is there anywhere I can go to for grants, scholarships, or basically any free money besides loans? I greatly appreciate it!

Doesn’t your employer pay you money for the internship? If not, try your university.

This might be an unpaid internship and it would be up to the OP to determine whether or not the experience is worth the out-of-pocket expenses. There are also internships where the student/parents pay for the experience.

In general I don’t think that there is free money to be had for this kind of thing but you might consider working a second job to support yourself while there. I think that would kill some of the fun in being in NYC though.

Before making a commitment, I’d make absolutely sure that this wasn’t a scam and that the company was prominent enough in the industry to make it worth your while to put their name on your resume.
