Occupation of Finding a Cure

Hello fellow CC'ers. I am considering various occupations as a high school student and was wondering about a research career dedicated to finding a cure for a disease such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, etc. Would this be along the same line as MD/Ph.D or would it be a branch of Pharmacy? What would a position such as this be titled? How large of a salary would it entail? I can imagine that a researcher working for a state institution would most likely be paid very little, but would one who labors for a wealthy privately owned Pharmaceutical company be paid handsomely? I am very ignorant about this topic and would greatly appreciate any elucidation. Thank you in advance.

One title is a “Biomedical researcher”, iirc – I think they get paid fairly well. Do you prefer lab or clinical research?

I would prefer to research for a privately owned company in the health industry sector because I feel as though a large Pharmaceutical company would pay high salaries since they would generate huge profits from a cure. Do you know which degrees these companies would look for in a situation I described above? I believe that I would prefer lab research, but I do not know much because I am in high school.
