Can anyone recommend good ocean engineering programs? My d wants to go this route but more coastal/environmental and not so much robotics exploring the ocean floor. Would she be better looking into civil or environmental engineering? Thanks!

Sea Grant Schools.

Thanks! I didn’t realize there were sea grant institutions. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that as I used to work for a land grant one!

University of Miami, excellent, excellent marine science programs, any category, not just biology. Many of my marine bio friends switched over to marine geology while I was there. Marine science majors take more “hard science” courses than arts and science science majors, courses that the engineers take. For example, calculus based physics, calc I and II, geology, general and organic chemistry, depending on your major. Excellent lab facilities both on and off campus.

ABET currently accredits ten ocean engineering programs in the United States:

* Florida Atlantic University
- Florida Institute of Technology
- University of Florida
- University of Hawaii at Manoa
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- University of Rhode Island
- Texas A&M University
- Texas A&M University at Galveston
- United States Naval Academy
- Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

For Marine Engineering consider the Merchant Marine Academy or Coast Guard Academy.

^ the above list is a good baseline. For undergrad it is not uncommon to major in Civil with a concentration in soil mechanics (many more school options) and then go on to Ocean Engineering in grad school.
