“Arroyo Grande High School senior Jorge Alcantar has chosen to attend Princeton University over Harvard in the fall.

“Both Ivy League schools had accepted Alcantar, of Oceano, whose Spanish-speaking parents emigrated from Mexico, and whose father is an irrigator at Robert Hayashi’s strawberry farm in Arroyo Grande.

“I chose Princeton because it was smaller and I liked the atmosphere better,” Alcantar said. “It was hard because of the reputation that Harvard has. A lot of people asked me why I didn’t choose Harvard. I just liked Princeton better.”

“Teacher Mike Sears— who had Alcantar in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program— said Alcantar and classmate Cameron Rice are “neck and neck” in the running for valedictorian at Arroyo Grande High this year.

Jorge, congratulations on your great choices and welcome to Princeton!

Congrats to Jorge! I identify with his situation (immigrant, first generation).

I got rejected by Princeton and Harvard (fortunately). ;)

do people write articles whenever someone chooses Harvard over Princeton? I think that would be more notable.
