Tilghman backs affirmative action

After reading this, I'm wondering if Princeton is trying to get students who apply from high schools that rarely send applicants to Princeton. Is this true? Or am I interpreting it incorrectly.

How come Stuyvesant doesn't send many kids to Princeton? Isn't it one of the best high schools in the country? Do they all go to Harvard instead?

actually, my friend who went there said that they sent more people to princeton than harvard/yale generally. She found the article ironic (she's at pton now btw)

But yes, I think they are looking to target schools that don't typically send students to the school, but at the same time, there's a certain reliability on the "feeder" schools. Who knows? I've heard from the admissions person that visited my school that they are trying to be more multicultural also.

You're right about the reliabilty factor, zant. I'm a little worried because my school isn't very compettitve compared to the types I'm hearing about on CC. We send one person to an ivy league school each year, and about 2 or 3 to stanford. Last year, a guy went to Dartmouth, and the year before another guy went to Yale.

You can always be that one person this year!
Good luckies :p

What about Scarsdale? I am a Latina from Scarsdale

I think that balances itself out? lol, being from scarsdale doesn't help but being latina does.

too bad asians dont get affirmative action :(

Yea, I don't think we do, but I still thought that we contributed to the multicultural stuff?

haha. well i think asians might actually be aided a wee bit at princeton since the asian population at princeton is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than harvard and yale. doesnt have the same prestige as yale/harvard in the asian world :D better for us zant

i'm asian too.. is there any reason why princeton has such a low asian population? i mean... how are we to know if they're going to keep it at that rate like all the past years or try to make it the same as harvard/yale?

anyway, good luck to y'all =).. i hope we all get in.

well im pretty sure that princeton just hasnt had the same asian population in the applications as harvard and yale. if you think about it, 95% of asians applying to ivies apply for the prestige and not for "where they want to go." i know in phoenix like 99% of the asians apply to harvard early just cuz its "harvard." princeton has never had the same prestige to those in asia. majority of the people in asia dont know princeton. everyone knows harvard. i guess its an advantage to us. princeton just doesnt have the international prestige and thats what most asians look for

Shrek i wish what you said wasn't true.... BUT YOU'RE RIGHT

Have you guys ever heard the horror stories of parents who name their kids Harvard and Yale? Pathetic. Imagine being named Harvard and going to El Camino College instead.... totally sucks. Like if you're name was Micheal Bolton (Office Space anyone?)

haha yay =), that made me happier than all the other depressing princeton things i've been reading. hopefully then, princeton WILL want to increase their asian population.

I hope so, but i do doubt it. Princeton does undoubetdly get zillions of asian applicant and the sole reason why they have a comparatively low asian percentage might be based on the fact that they truly want a multicultural and ethnically represented student body.

affirmative action is my friend :D

Still.. I despise affirmative action, because it's totally putting race (something we can't control) over who we are (our academic choices, our hard work, etc).

well princeton generally has about 5-6% black, 4-5% hispanic and 9-10% asian...rest are white. not that ethnically represented :D princeton is known for being pretty white haha

yea, im kind mad that one of my "friends" showed off her harvard likely letter, even though her stats were nowhere near mine. Im glad for her, but just cause she's hispanic she gets a likely letter? PLEASE! PRINCETON SEND ME A LIKELY LETTER! IM HISPANIC! I SWEAR! FORGET MY YELLOW SKIN AND FLAT FACE AND SMALL EYES! man, i hate AA.
