October 2009 SAT Critical Reading

so far only missed admonition…
i said prohibition because i’m a moron…
i could still get an 800!!!

cs12345: The question was, What is the purpose of the passage?

“I’ll try again from earlier… What did those of you put on the art history passage when explaining why the author put “Even though not all artists had a flock of sheep…” (words to the effect); I put that it was to downplay instruction…”

I chose the last choice, I think it was something about mocking conventional biographies

yes mocking was the correct answer for one of the questions

i thought the vocab was balls hard

Lemonio

actually you’ve missed the “artifially inhanced” and “admiration” questions as well :)

if Im not mistaken the quote that the artificial/recognizable question refered to did not include discussion of mercator projection but rather stopped right after “instant interpretation.”

I dont remember aritificially enhanced. what was the question that had that as a choice?

“I dont remember aritificially enhanced. what was the question that had that as a choice?”

it was in the geology passage. i think it was asking about how the author characterized the maps - whether they were ‘immediately understandable’ or ‘artificially enhanced’

i really am not convinced

admirred and instantly recognizable have both been supported by more people on here. generally, I’d say on a forum with people as intelligent as they are here the majority decision will be right. And right now it’s about 2:1 for both of those.

the more we think about it, the more we will overthink/misinterpret the question.

how about this, I get one. You get one. We both get 800s. Sound good?

Habituated by my own geological training and knowledge, I was never quite prepared upon opening this New … Universe to encounter the faces of so many worlds, dangling in the black of space, their features available to the eye of instant interpretation.

proof of discovery
quote from passage that sky high nicely found
“The fairy tale of the
discovery!!!
by an older artist or discerning
patron of the Boy Wonder, usually in the guise of a lowly shepherd boy, has been a
stock-in-trade of artistic mythology ever since Vasari immortalized the young Giotto,”

reason for artificially enhanced
available to the eye of instant interpretation. Within this book, each planet and moon had its accompanying map, composed of a computer-generated image that flattened its subject out on a single rectangular strip-the so-called Mercator projection.

they are available! because of the mercator projection. just a regular picture would not have made the features clear, but the computer generated “flattened image” made things there for your to see

@stix
yes it did!!!
there was a question about what he found fascinating about the mercator projection.
the answer was teh usefulness of it in modern technology

@skyhigh.
do you know WHAT is available for instant interpretation
the features!!!
do you know WHY?
because of the computer generated images!!!
the features themselves are not immediately understable!!!
first you must look at the artificial enhancements!!!

NO! I got 1 vocab wrong. I knew pedant sounded a little too negative to be the answer. And after I was so sure that I got -0. Oh well, even the worst curve still allows room for at least 1 error.

Oh, and I agree with stix2400.

^wait so what was the answer to the ben franklin vocab question?

lemonio- but the question asked was relevant to the info before mercator was mentioned.

polymath was the answer to the ben franklin question

@cs…the question cites the “features” before the mercator projection
but you need to understand the question in context.
the reason for why the features are immediatly apparent are the mercator projections

cs: Answer to Franklin question was polymath

lemonio- Even though the map was projected, there is no reason to think it was “enhanced.” Furthermore, the instant interpretation was explicit.

it says “available for instant interpretation”
its instantly interpretable, not understandable!!!
furthermore it said that the computer generated mercator projections were flattened!!!
how is that not artificially enhanced!!!

yeah, some of that vocab was pretty difficult, but I really hope a few ppl on here are wrong. as far as lemonio goes, im def in favor of admiration and immediately understandable.

also, which was the experiment CR - did it have lexicon and the one about the girl who wasnt doing what other girls were doing?

what was the TV one about?

I think that the relationship between “interpretation” and “understandable” is stronger than the relationship between “flattened” and “enhanced.” But we’ll find out the correct in three weeks or so.

lexicon was not expirimental
