October 2015 SAT Preparation

Hi everyone! Why have I not ever seen this thread?!

I see we have the same score goals (2250-2300) nice to meet everyone!

So today I took a full test and scored 2220

breakdown!

Math 800
Writing 770 (2 stupid MCQ mistakes, I gave myself 10 on the essay)
Reading 650 (vocab 18/19, and the passages… 10 mistakes T_T) but with 2-3 extra minutes on one section I got: 680 (so 2250… the difference!)
Now I would like to ask you all (specially @JuicyMango !!) how should I continue my studying this week to get a 2300? I will be taking a full test daily, but do you think I should now stop using books for math and writing and just focus on finishing up my essay examples research and just learning carefully from each mistake I make in both subjects? As for reading (well, my issue is not exactly the questions. It’s… the reading itself.) Will reading a classic be helpful at the moment? What else would you advise me to do to raise my reading score?

Thanks everyone!!

@JuicyMango I don’t know why you’re worried xD but if I were you I’d go over the Barron’s 3500 word list or research more examples… just to be ready for any surprises :stuck_out_tongue:

I think you should be relaxed. In the worst cases your score (hopefully) would not fall below 2300, and a score in the 2300 range is just like a 2400 in college applications. (I read this on a PrepScholar article)

1 hour away from 1 week away…

Pray for us.

Oh god.

Everybody is aiming for 2200, and here I am praying I break 2000 xD

Wish me luck!

Hey fam,
I’m a junior hoping for 2300+. good luck to everyone!

@Beshara if you are already scoring in the 1850-1900 range, then you have very good chances of getting a 2000+. Continue learning carefully from each mistake and working on your weaknesses.

Oh.

Thanks so much for that, I actually score >1900 most of the time. Gave me a nice, reassuring feeling. xD

My problem is motivation. I just can’t sit down and do a full length anymore. I used to do one daily at the beginning of summer, but that feeling inside of me that pushed me through has died out. What do you do when you want to FOCUS for 4 hours straight?

@Beshara on my first SAT I scored above 1900 but below 2000 (it was a hard SAT tbh). Saying this to give you even more hope!

That’s awesome. And personally, I couldn’t sit 4 hours too. I have to listen to music, eat, anything! :stuck_out_tongue: Since you’ve done it a lot of SATs for 4 hours - you’re ready - break the test up like I do and you won’t feel this “sick” of the SAT (what’s more sickening, by the way, is solving 3 CR in a row and anaylzing each one…)

By the way I spent my summer studying too so I know how you feel. My reading score specially has been stagnant and it’s frustrating. But it’s worth it… be sick for one more week rather than another whole month (november)

@Beshara have this mindset:

You’re now TOO close to scoring in the 2000 range. And if you focus on a few more weaknesses, you can do it. Would you spend this week fixing these little mistakes, or wait for another whole month of frustration?? Remember if you get a 2000+ you’re FREE! You can enjoy your coming vacations and you won’t even have to worry about the SAT anymore. Isn’t this week worth sacrifice?

Hi guys - I came across a CR question that I could not really tell what it asks for.

What does this question want me to do? “A central parallel found in the passage is between the”

This is the question. Can someone please explain it to me? (correct answer C)

I think the question wants me to find something similar.

Is the answer C because when it was spring they were encouraged and excited while when it was a “windless February” they were afraid and nervous?

Also, please check why I eliminate each answer:
A: “actual personalities” not revealed.
B: when they commute they go from unsuitable to suitable, but that does not provide the same relation with the flow of the rehersal… They have always been worried during the rehearsals.
D: “creativity” not revealed.
E: “innermost thoughts” not revealed.

Hey Guys, I’m a neophyte in this site…I’m retaking SAT this October. Last October I took my first SAT to score 800 M,590 CR and 610 W -total 2000. This time I’ve prepared by taking a lot of practice tests I downloaded from ■■■■■■■■■■■■ and memorizing unknown words from SAT CR questions and passages. My writing section improved and I most of the times get 49/49 correct in writing mcqs but I cannot get my CR score above 750/760. Any suggestions?

Hey back again. Got between a 2300-2360 on my final full length practice test before next sat. It’s funny because my original goal was a measly 2100. My specific goals have been modified to 800 in math and in writing. Hopefully 700+ reading. Either way im retaking it in november unless i think i did my absolute best. Im betting the curve is going to be tough.

Can people start talking about what theyre going to do before a day before the test & plans ?
Im planning on not going to school thurs/fri & i wonder if any others may be doing this

My biggest fear in SAT: all the examples I have prepared for won’t work for the essay prompt.
Like I saw a question asking should we care about domestic affairs more than international affairs, I was like what. is. this. And another one’s like do you think people who move around a lot achieves more than those staying at the same place. I had no clue how to do these.

I have some history, literature, movie, technology examples, but sometimes I really feel like none of them would work for some prompts. Anyone got advice for me to overcome that fear??

Thaaaanks

@kentonpalmer i always thought it’s crazy to miss school because of a test (also my parents wouldn’t let me)
Personally if I stay at home all day, I end up getting up at 10 and wasting a bunch of time, so i might as well go to school haha
But you’re scoring 2300+, what’s the point of skipping school?? Even if you take the test tomorrow you’ll do well anyways, don’t overreact to a test and don’t let it control you

@BethanyD: Sorry for the late reply, I’ve been so busy lately with all of my AP classes :/. Well first off you seem to be very solid in math so don’t waste your time on it. Same thing with writing, you seem to be doing well on the multiple choice and essay portion. So my point is that you should focus solely on critical reading as that is the subject in which you are missing the most points in. I actually started at around the 500’s in CR but now I can score straight 800’s every single practice test I do. And tbh with you, the thing that helped me the most in drastically increasing my critical reading score was to just take practice section after practice section, and afterwards I would brutally go over each question and reason with my self why an answer choice was correct or incorrect. Slowly, my brain was able to do this same type of process-of-elimination during the test, so I rarely miss a passage-based question now. As for vocab, you seem to be doing very well so I won’t address that.

So in short, right now I think you should just finish your essay examples research and take multiple critical reading sections from various practice SAT’s (Collegeboard ones of course). Do not waste your time by taking the whole 3-4 hr SAT test…you will be wasting your time since your math and writing scores are already exemplary.

@JuicyMango good luck! I’ll be doing AP physics very soon this year

guess whatttt  I scored a 680-700 on CR on the last time! (and thanks, you give me a lot of hope… I started out by 45 on the PSAT!!)

I’m very happy because my score was seriously stuck in the low 600s for months! I felt like my entire summer was wasted because I doubted I’d improve… I was very bothered but nonetheless went on.

I am now doing what you said and I’m noticing my mistakes: for example I was looking over a question yesterday and noticed that the choice I picked was perfect but had that one word that was never mentioned in the passage.

Thanks a lot!

@JuicyMango What lists did you use for vocab? I’ve already gone through Direct Hits and the Essential 500. Also, did you find any prep books particularly helpful?

Using grubers 3400 wirld list & barrons will prepare you perfectly! & i got sick last night at a grad event so im commencing staying home already. 4 days out & im doing everything i can to not be sick
