Before summer started, i took the March SAT and got a 2150 (740 Math, 720 Writing, 10 essay, 690 Reading). My goal is 2300+ on the upcoming October 2015 SAT. In June, I used the blue book by CB and i kept getting high 2200’s on my SAT. However, recently, my scores have been going down and I’ve only been averaging 650 on each section. I am also running out of tests from the blue book so i have a couple questions:
What are some tactics I should look into to help me improve my score??? I don’t know why but I am missing like 5+ questions on each section and I don’t know why? My goal is for 800 Math, 750+ writing and 750+ reading.
Which prep book will help me better improve my score??? Mainly, in math, i make careless mistakes regarding addition or I miss questions about surface area/volume of 3D objects. My main problem is CR passages and analyzing author’s tone and meaning of the passage.
Are there any other tips you guys suggest for helping me break the 2300 barrier?
Do people need to compare themselves with others in order to appreciate what they have?
Realizing that people do not need to compare themselves with others to appreciate what they have is a crucial ingredient for both self appreciation and self actualization. A plethora of mediums repeatedly convey this with the worlds of literature, history and science doing so most eloquently.
I used a similar approach on my May test and got a !0/12. I saw a video on youtube the day before my paper and wrote down my intro. It worked so i guess I will use it again in october.
I’m new here to CC. Been following and reading many SAT and college admissions threads for a few mos. now, and finally decided to make an account. Anyways, I know this is random and all but just thought I’d share: I’m a rising junior, looking to get at least a 2250+. Got a 2080 (680 CR, 710 Math, 690 Writing) the first time I ever took a practice test (no prep at all before this, took it in early July using the blue book) but since haven’t beaten that (taken 5 tests total so far). Keep floating in the mid to high 2000s. First time seemed to be an outlier w/ my math score, as since I have only gotten 650s and 660s. Writing I usually get low 700s and Reading high 600s aside from one 750. Really want to just break out of this rut and at least hit the 21s. Also just thought I’d join in on the discussion, and see if anyone had any major advice for me. I really, really want to do well, to increase my college admissions chances, and I am motivated, but I get distracted easily and tend to procrastinate a lot. I am self-studying, btw. Using Blue Book and Black Book, as well as some materials online. I take timed tests once a week. Really hoping to at least break 22 on Oct., as I am most likely taking only Oct. and January (if need be!).
Not sure how many of you will read this, or even see this, but thanks anyways!
Hey sorry i never answered, barrons math specific book was fantastic, but the reading one was brutal. The writing on the other hand was fairly good; however, i found sparknotes seven deadly sins to be better. Im consistently scoring 2200+ now even on barrons tests (im on a break from one right now). As for my focus problem, ive started taking 2 sats a day right now and honestly doing one is like a gift at this point. Btw to the people who are struggling with reading ive had the craziest transformation over the past week. I did a few things:
1: get excited about the passage and go into it with an attitude that looks forward to being edified by the SAT.
2: do every question sequentially (read, stop do a question, continue)
3: always ask yourself why the others options must be wrong
4: (this one was huge) i started skipping questions. Everything everywhere always says go for broke and answer everything, but id rather a confident 750 than a 700 on critical reading, ill leave math for the 800. For me at least, i can do the reading passages and probably wonder about 2 questions. If i feel confident in guessing i will but if you aee certain about your other answers, then so what if you skip one question. I took my score from (remember ive been taking a test daily (2 tests daily now)) 10 straight 690’s on reading to 4 straight 740’s (even on barron’s tests)
I also memorized grubers word list, wow
Anyways im starting to feel confident, originally my goal was just to break 2100 this october, then it was a 2200, now im going for 2300
Should we care just as much about people in other countries as we do about people in our own country?
Realizing that we should care just as much about people in other countries than people in our own is a crucial ingredient for societal development. A plethora of examples from the worlds of business, politics and history categorically prove that caring more about our own people can prove to be catastrophic.
In the renowned 1987 case of Chevron ,an American petroleum company, it was Chevron’s direct lack of care for Nigerian citizens that caused a rise in oil prices for Americans. Chevron was known for mistreating Nigerian workers in its Nigerian oil extraction facilities in comparison to how American workers were treated in Chevron facilities in the U.S.A. Chevron would force Nigerian workers to work tedious hours and expose them to toxic substances such as arsenic while not paying them anything near to what american workers were payed. Chevron justified its actions by claiming that this would ensure low oil prices for Americans even though the Nigerian government repeatedly urged Chevron to cease exploiting and abusing Nigerian workers. This eventually led the Nigerian government to revokes Chevrons oil extraction permits in 1989 reducing the global output and supply of oil by over one hundred thousand barrels a day. This caused global oil prices to rise significantly harming u.s residents. Hence, Chevron’s actions undoubtedly prove that we should care equally about people as the price rise that u.s residents faced were much higher than if Chevron treated its Nigerian workers properly.
Another relevant example would be Saddam Hussein’s complete lack of empathy for Kuwaiti citizens in the 1989 Gulf war. Saddam Hussein , the past leader of Iraq, invaded the defenseless state of Kuwait ruthlessly on September 2nd in order steal Kuwait’s oil. Saddam ordered his soldiers to kill any non Iraqi citizen in Kuwait no matter their age, gender or political affiliation while treating Iraqis very well. This led to the massacre of thousands of innocents Kuwaitis who previously did not mind Saddam Hussein to take over Kuwait but now despised him and led to the formation of an armed grouped that eventually toppled Saddam Hussein’s rule in Kuwait with the aid of U.S forces. This example therefor undeniably proves that caring about people is necessary as Saddam Hussein could have easily taken over Kuwait if he had cared equally about Kuwaiti and Iraqi citizens.
Finally, the U.S generous economic aid (Marshall plan) to the allied forces people after world war 2 that caused the U.S to be one of the greatest military powers today. The allied forces had just defeated Nazi Germany and Europe’s people as a whole were in a critical situation. Europeans countries pleaded the U.S for aid but at the same time, Americans had just experienced a stock market crash and lost a considerable amount of money. This meant that the U.S government had to make a choice wether to help its own people or people in Europe. The U.S decided to split the fund it intended to spend on the stock market in half in order to spend the other half to aid people in Europe. This resulted in Europe and its people to be able to reconstruct themselves and help the U.S.A in all of its future wars. Hence, this example ultimately proves that caring as much about our own people and people in other countries is crucial as the U.S reaped huge benefits.
After a careful analysis of Chevrons 1987 case in Nigeria, Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait and the Marshall plan, it is without a shadow of doubt that caring just as much about people in other countries than people in our own country is indeed necessary. Not caring equally can prove deadly.
Id say a 10, does anyone else concur?
Also, school is about to start, and im wondering which courses people will be taking because im not sure if mine are hard enough. My school only offers ap bio/lit/euro history but im also self studying for ap calc&ap world history in edition to those three. Namely, im looking at Harvard, Yale, and Columbia. Just for a rough idea (even tho this is an sat forum) what are people taking this year & whats your sat score looking like?
All your examples are history based try and read some novels and newspapers so that you can introduce some current affairs and literature into your essays. I personally use history for my first example, a novel for my second example, and current affairs issues for my last example, then I quote sam1 in my conclusion and relate it to my examples and essay topic.
Is there any specific reason you (other people) choose to use three examples? I find if i use two i can make a much more in depth argument. My essays are still 400-500 words but always use history followed by personal or literature. I used to always use literature as my second example, but it seems everyone does v well when using a personal example.
Hey ! I know I won’t fit in here, but I’m taking the OCT 3RD SAT as well… I got a 1430 on my MAY SAT ( I had to take an AP Exam), and I’ve been studying diligently all summer. I bought Barron’s grammar book for the “sat, act, and more”, but I think I’m going to return it and buy Erica Meltzer’s book. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it… do you have any tips? I also need help with the math section
I’m getting 2400’s on my practice tests but I feel like its some type of bad omen for the real test -_-. I’m just working on my essay and learning more vocab for now. Good luck to everyone else studying for this boring exam :P. May we all get good scores so we can move on with our lives.
Could somebody grade my essay?
Also suggest improvement and changes that I can make to score better.
Thanks in advance.
Assignment: Should people take more responsibility for solving problems that affect their communities or the nation in general?
My essay:
It is crucial that people take more responsibility for solving problems that affect their community or nation.Government alone by drafting new resolutions or laws cannot solve these problems prevalent in our society. Innumerable examples throughout history and literature substantiate this claim.
History stands witness to the fact that when people take responsibility for solving the problems of society, real change takes place. This statement is exemplified by Booker T. Washington who realised that the biggest challenge being faced by the African-American community during the Reconstruction Period was their ignorance about importance of practical and industrial knowledge. During this time, the African-American community showcased great superficiality with regard to matters related to education. They considered learning Latin or Greek as a shortcut to escaping labour. They considered that reading books with big titles will make them eligible for various incentives and a better social status. Booker sought to reform this attitude by building a stronger foundation, in terms of education, for his community. He went on to establish a school a Tuskgee, which soon became one of the best institutes for coloured people. His students achieved great success in their life. He thus became a revered African-American educator who brought a change in the society.
Another example of people bringing a change in society by taking responsibility for the problems faced by the community is given by Malala Yousafzai. Malala as a young adolescent had harboured the dream to educate herself. This valiant girl, as a student in Pakistan, was shot in her forehead by a terrorist group who were against the education of girls. But even after this incident and undergoing multiple surgeries, she has remained a staunch supporter of education for girls around the world. Her fortitude is exemplified by how she continues her journey to educate herself. Today, she is the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner.
In light of both of these examples, one can state the fact that it is only when the people take responsibility for the prevailing problems of the community, does the community prosper and changes for better. This essay can be perfectly summarised by the quote “Do not ask what the country can do for you, ask what you can do for the country.”
