The Stanford website says " The student may not apply to an Early Action,Restrictive Early Action, or Early Decision program (or any variation thereof) at any private college/university in the U.S.

This restriction includes applications for scholarships or special academic programs where the college/university requires the student to apply under an early notification plan for consideration."

The second paragraph is little bit confusing. Can we apply to USC BS/MD program if we are applying to Stanford under REA ? Because for USC BS/MD program, we have to submit the application earlier than the usual deadline. But this is not a EA, REA or ED program. Would appreciate the response.

I contacted the admissions office and asked about this specific situation. They said that you are not allowed to apply to both - you will have to apply Regular Decision to Stanford if you really want to apply to USC BA/MD.

“As far as I know you cannot apply for merit scholarship @ USC if u are applying to Stanford under REA”

wait, what?

that can’t be true… the only difference between the January and December deadlines for USC is that the December one is for people who want to apply for financial aid. It’s not considered “early” decision, its considered the “financial aid” decision

in the past, colleges with scholarship/financial aid deadlines were exempt, but they changed their policies this year. so, no, you cannot apply to ANY private university under any type of early notification program if you want to apply REA to stanford. otherwise, suck it up and apply RD.

I was going to do UMich EA, my own state UConn, and USC by 12/01, but is that not possible now? That’s ridiculous, how can they just change it like that?

You can DEFINITELY apply to USC for the scholarship. It’s not EA or anything. PLUS, Stanford does state that you can apply EA if it’s for scholarships.

cometbro must be wrong. I do not know what he or she said to the Stanford admissions office to get a wrong answer, but there is absolutely nothing about the USC BA/MD program that is inconsistent with the Stanford EA policy. You have to submit your application by December 1, but there is no early notification feature to the program. USC doesn’t even have any ED or EA program for its admissions. There is no chance, 0, that Stanford would apply its policy to forbid applying to the USC program and Stanford EA.

ripemango: what part of “private” is confusing to you? Granted, the University of Michigan probably ought to be considered a private university, but it isn’t. The Stanford policy does not prevent you from applying EA to Michigan and/or Connecticut when you apply REA to Stanford. The Stanford web site makes this extremely clear by italicizing the word “private” in the paragraph quoted by the OP and saying explicitly “The student may apply to any public college/university” (under an early-notification plan).
