# of applicants this year noticeably lower than last year- racism on campus deters students?

“The San Luis Obispo university received a total of 65,155 applications for fall 2019. That’s slightly fewer than a record 65,507 applications Cal Poly received the previous year when less than a third of applicants were accepted.”

Could this possibly have to do with the several racial incidents which have occurred on campus over this last year?

I doubt 350 fewer applications signifies anything but noise in the data. But I will say that any decrease at all is going to be music to the ears of many anxious Cali parents and prospective CalPoly students!

Here is a mildly informed reason why applications dropped:

Basically it says that Cal Poly was less active in seeking student growth, since it wants to reduce enrollment which I am guessing translates in fewer promotional activities to generate applications.

Painting an entire student body with a smelly brush based on the reprehensible actions of a few dumb headed individuals feels like a bit of a stretch to me.

Maybe kids are getting more realistic about how hard it is to get into the most competitive California public schools - UCLA and Berkeley also saw declines this year: https://www.latimes.com/local/education/la-me-edu-uc-applications-20190131-story.html

Maybe an increase due to “year of the dragon,” born in the year 2000, had some truth to it (with two-thirds applying for 2022 and one-third for 2023).

Add one more factor. With year of the snake the following year (2001), there was a decline in number of Asian kids born that year. I’m sure this had at least a small factor in it (the other third for 2023).

well @sawadeeka that sounds like a racial argument, although not in the negative sense
