% of blacks @ Northwestern

I just had a general question for anyone who attends Northwestern or has perviously. What is or was the % of blacks or how many blacks did/do you see on campus??

it's 6% black and to be honest, black students don't have a strong presence on campus, there has been some controversy over this recently but the embracement of all-black sororities and fraternities has led many in the student body (mostly white students i think) to cry foul, that although black students are here, they aren't interacting with the rest of the campus (a campus that wants them to) and instead restricting themselves to their own greek system and social groups

There is heavy pressure for black students to join the black fraternities/sororities.

I hardly ever socialized with my frosh roommate after he joined a black fraternity.

And the black guys in my fraternity were shunned by the others as "outcasts" for having joined a "white" fraternity (btw, I'm not white).

^^ yeah, that's kind of the impression i've gotten

it's unfortunate for what is reported to be such a diverse campus. there is no point in diversity if the different students aren't interacting with each other.

But then again, it's like that at pretty much every campus.

Ok well thanks for the replies. .

k&s what fraternity do you belong to?

Hmmm.....

"that although black students are here, they aren't interacting with the rest of the campus (a campus that wants them to) and instead restricting themselves to their own greek system and social groups"

I wholeheartedly disagree with this statement. Black students are in EVERY part of campus. That is, there are Black students in every aspect of Northwestern life. There are Black people in every college, residence hall, many student groups, and even the student government. The presence the students show is proportional to their population; I think Black students do pretty well for being 6% of the student body. And this notion that Blacks have a sort of obligation to their White peers to 'interact' is offensive at best. Like they say, if interaction with Black students is so important to the campus, then non-Black people should come to some shows/events put on by Black students- (and indeed many do)- they'll get all the interaction they want!

"There is heavy pressure for black students to join the black fraternities/sororities."

-Maybe, but of the nearly 480 Black students on campus, I'd say that under 75 are ACTUALLY part of a Black frat/sorority. This is not, by far, a large number.

"and instead restricting themselves to their own greek system and social groups"

"it's unfortunate for what is reported to be such a diverse campus. there is no point in diversity if the different students aren't interacting with each other."

So, I take it you have joined, or attempted to join a Black frat? These organizations are open to all students; I don't know why people on campus make it seem like Black people DON'T want to interact with others. People are drawn to the fraternities they like; some Blacks can't be blamed for relating more to one frat than another, just as some Whites can't be blamed for not joining Black/Latino/Asian frats en mass.

"And the black guys in my fraternity were shunned by the others as "outcasts" for having joined a "white" fraternity"

The notion that Blacks in White frats being outcasts is overblown at best. Sure, this is frowned upon by some, but I assure you, there is no sweeping sentiment among Black students about joining a White frat - especially seeing how the Black student body is as diverse as it is.

"or how many blacks did/do you see on campus??"

Many, if you know where and how to look....

Oh and one more thing… There is, to my knowledge, only 1 White person in any Black frat/sorority on campus. There are, however, at least (from what I know) 5 Black people in White frats/sororities (and k&s' even has one of them). Let’s think. There are 5600 White people on campus so 1/5600 of the White population is in a Black frat; and there are 480 Black people on campus so at least 1/96 of the Black population is in a White frat. If you look at it this way, Black students are actually MORE interactive than their peers. So, I’d ask: why are so many White people "restricting themselves to their own greek system and social groups"?

Ivybound,

My husband and I went to Northwestern 25 years ago, so I can't really speak specifically to today's racial climate. However, both of us came from from large public high schools that were very integrated and we felt VERY comfortable in the NU environment. In my opinion, blacks who were not exposed to a lot of cultures before college had more trouble feeling at home at NU and were more likely to be distru****l of their peers. Both of us met some kids from places like Montana who told us that they had never known a black person before. But both of us were involved in numerous activities and had many friends from all different cultures. Black studentns who want to set themselves apart can do that, but I don't think you'll find it necessary. My husband was in Alpha Phi Alpha, but still participated in dorm social activities.

Thanks alot texasmama..

the daily northwestern ran an article this past year (rob blackman or someting) and he was talking about the lack of diversity on campus, it was biggish controversy, multicultural student organizations marched and had a discussion about it, you should be able to find it on the daily northwestern website

thanks alot i just found it this morning!!

ivyboundbrotha08, are you ivy bound? If so, what is your interest in NU? Just wondering.

zoomers- yes I am ivy bound, I know NU is not an ivy and I know that it's not considered one. Although I am applying to Princeton and Harvard, I look at non-ivys as well..

I think theres alot of people on CC who are ivy bound that are also applying to non-ivys..

DDiva, I'm sure you are right. It only makes sense to do that given the competition these days.

I was hoping that ivyboundbrotha08 had definite interest in NU. I like what he has to say and I also like the spirt of Iamjacquesbarjon, the self proclaimed "just a black man looking for chances."

I have grown up in a lily white town, value diversity and these guys sound like they'd be great additions to NU. I was hoping that "ivybound" wasn't, but that was wishful thinking on my part. I guess his name was a dead giveaway.

Oh wel zoomers! Don't get me wrong, I am applying to Ivys but I really do have a found intrest in NU! Even though its not in ivy, I still am applying and actually im thinking about apply ED.

I think that NU, campus really attracted me when I went to vist the people they were extremely nice and friendly. Despite what pepople might say about the whole diversity issue and race interaction at NU. I feel that it wouldnt be that big of problem if I get accepted and attended, because I love intreacting with different races not just blacks, and not just whites you know. I defiantly would say that NU is on my top 5 list of colleges I am applying to!!

you do know that ED is binding so you wouldn't get the chance to apply to your ivies.

yes eternity1115 I know that!

I said im considering..
