Off-campus housing for freshmen

Is it possible for freshmen to live off-campus?

I don’t believe so.

Am curious about why you’d want to go to a college like Bates and then want to live off campus??

The college owns around 25 houses situated very close to the campus (like almost across the street) where students can live. However, I believe that they still are on the meal plan since many of these houses don’t have full kitchens. Freshman can live in two of the houses if they choose (and if their requests are honored). There is the chem-free Clason House which is all first year and around 30 people. Then there is Milliken House which I believe is all class.

From our experience (D goes there) it is “One comprehensive fee” which includes everything including room and board.

RochesterMom, do you by any chance know whether that “comprehensive fee” includes room and board during some breaks (ie spring break, mid-term break) as well?
Ah and does it include insurance? If not, how much money left to be paid apart from that “comprehensive fee” to go to Bates?
Thank you :)

If you are talking health insurance I don’t beleive it covers that. If you are talking something like renters insurance I don’t think that is covered either. From our end I know that our home owners insurance will cover. We looked into it. Some breaks housing is included but not meals. Dorms are shut down and for at least some of the time there is no cafeterias on campus open for the December/January break. Most of the other times the dorms are open I believe and you can get meals on campus although I think (but could be wrong) that you pay for them. Several local places do deliver to campus for pizza, Thai, etc. We don’t pay anything more than the comprehensive fee to Bates. D however comes home or goes to a friends house every break. The only money paid outside of that that I know of is $70 for her parking permit since she has a car on campus.

Oh - Dorms and some meals are served for most breaks because the sports teams are there.

thank you RochesterMom. That really helps.
I dont think campus will be open for winter break, either, but it helps to know whether extra fee is charged for housing during other breaks :)
